Today we woke to very low clouds and rain which is not what we were expecting. We headed into one of the trendy strips in Berkeley called Elmwood. Nadia was very happy to find real, good tasting coffee to have with her breakfast! We wandered into a few of the shops in the area and got some very cool ideas for gifts for family, and for ourselves!
After this we drove to downtown Berkeley and the University district. There were a lot of restaurants that we made mental notes to revisit. We looked at a map and found that our hotel is actually not too far from some really interesting parts of the University, including the Botanical Gardens. So we left the car at the hotel and walked to the University. What the maps don't tell you is how steep some of the roads we need to walk along will be! We walked past some of the fraternity houses near campus, complete with the Greek lettering on their facades, it reminded us both of so many American teen movies!
We returned to our hotel after our wander through the university and decided it was time for a late lunch. Damien surprised Nadia by taking her over the Bay Bridge and into San Francisco to a place featured on one of our favourite TV shows, Man vs Food. Ike's Place sells sandwiches, but what sandwiches. Think of Subway, and then multiply by a lot! The sandwiches are big, and filled with a lot of stuff, and then of course you get a packet of chips to go with it! We got our sandwiches and headed to a park not far away to eat. The park was aptly named Buena Vista and we enjoyed our sandwich and the view very much indeed. Needless to say we had no need for dinner that night!
