Hello from Kuching!
We have had a fab time here, we believe mother nature noted our previous efforts to see some wildlife and has rewarded us in Kuching.
Our first amazing wildlife experiance was at the Semmengoh Orangutan conservation centre where orphaned or illegally shipped animals are looked after in a large park, however it has been going so long they have started to breed there too! The Orangutans are free to come and go as they please however the rangers feed them at 9am and 3pm everday where a few turn up for a free meal. We were lucky enough to see seven! When we first arrived a mother and baby were sat in a tree about four feet away from us and we got to watch them for about an hour- it was really exciting and the baby was cute and very funny too.
We then made the trip to Bako National Park, to see the rare Proboscis monkeys. When we arrived we had only planned to stay one day, however we got offered some cheap beds so we stayed for one night. We treked around a small loop of 6km on our first day stopping at one of the known Proboscis hang out beaches, but we didn't spot any! On returing into HQ however we spotted load of them only yards from our front door... it was really cool (as well as macaques and silver leaf monkeys)! We also got taken to see some pit vipers, bearded pigs and a flying lemar by an enthusiastic (but annoying) wildlife lover. As we were staying the night we descied to take the night walk with a guide and we are so glad we did! Here are some of the things we saw: A flying lemar complete with baby accessory, a sleeping owl, fireflies, stick insects, scorpions, lizards, gekkos, big as your hand spiders, bats, catfish and for the finale the slow lorris!! If you are unsure of what a slow lorris is please google image it, it is so cute and also quite rare the last time one was spotted at the park was may of last year!
Lots of love dale and liz xxxx (photos soon..internet here is so slow it hurts)
P.S. Dale would like to tell you that this afternoon we saw a rather large snake eating a rather large rat! It was gross but quite interestingat the same time.
P.P.S. liz would like to tell you that a monkey pissed on dale! His aim was perfect! ha ha ha!
