Total bloody disappointment! That's the only way to describe how we felt after getting up early, getting our warm clobber on and then phoning the helicopter company to find out our trip to the Grand Canyon had been cancelled due to "severe weather conditions, including zero visibility" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I get a full refund but that is no real concillation for losing what was to be a highlight of our trip. We knew the weather would be a bit iffy but to strike a freak weather event like being experienced here is just damn annoying!
So after sulking for a while we decided to find a show or something to go to, so after a quick internet search we settled on Cirque du Soleil, and then we headed down to the tour desk in our foyer where the guy told us the best place to get tickets at this late stage would be the box office at Treasure Island where the show is held.
We duly headed off in pouring rain stopping for a coffee and then joining queue of about 40 outside the theatre to try and get some tickets for the 7.30pm show. For a change we struck it lucky, with good seats still being available and the desk clerk giving us 25% off because Mumsie and I were over 55!!!!!!! What a nice man! It also helped that we were Aussies who had "missed out on our big trip" - great sob story, but he bought it and we walked out with great seats at a great price.
Back to the Miracle Mile for a late lunch and then to the unit to do some washing and re-packing ready for our flight to Washington tomorrow which leaves at 7.40am so it wil be an early start. Jase and I went down to the lobby and printed off our boarding passes and organised a private pick up to get us from Dulles Airport - which is about 70 kilometres from our apartment in Capitol Hill - the shuttle buses can take up to two hours to reach there because of all the drop offs! The only public transport is a bus to the Metro and then numerous stops and line changes before we would make our place, so we settled on the car even though it is quite dear!
We then walked back to Treasure Island and armed with a couple of drink vouchers marched into the Kahunaville Bar (great name eh?) for a couple of pre show drinkies! Our vouchers got us a cocktail and a beer and so the girls had a margarita and Jase and I had a beer in a very neat stubby look alike made of aluminium - wasn't bad either! There was quite a crowd of people in there watching a gridiron game being played at the Vegas Uni Stadium and there was a DJ type person geeing them up by offering free shooters for the side of the bar making the most noise. The three bartenders got into the act and started to do mixing and shaking tricks, then the DJ got them into a real competition that had the crowd egging them on to do more stuff! In the end we were all shouting and yelling, supporting our particular guy until the show finished with the bartenders standing on the bar pouring six shakers of cocktails into six glasses at the same time - a ripper show!!! - and then pouring shots down our throats!!!!! We also got the glasses of cocktails he had made!!!! By now our show was about to start and so we raced to our seats quite primed up by the performance!
Cirque du Soleil Mystere was absolutely brilliant, a fantastic show of acrobats, tumblers etc. and our seats were first class, somewhat making up for the disappointment of missing our Canyon trip and we finished the night by having a great dinner at a cafe in Caesars Palace. The rain had thankfully stopped by the time we got outside and we were able to walk easily back home for a very quick pack and clean up of the unit before we hit the sack at midnight!
