Mount Isa - home to famous people like Pat Rafter, Greg Norman and Gerard Denton.
Mt Isa, Queensland
Driving into Mount Isa the first thing I think is not 'I really need a shower' but rather 'is that really a mine site right in the middle of town?'
I heard or read somewhere that at night the mine looks like an ocean liner in the desert. I am not sure I am buying that however the scale of the thing is immense however it is still strange that you have mine, main road, town.
Apparently you can hear the blasts from the dynamite at 8am and pm - I didn't hear anything over the murmur/creaking bodies of the grey nomads at our caravan park.
It's another town in the nice to visit, but not sure I could live there. If you do get here make sure you do the underground mine tour, they have a replica of a mine complete with drills, explosions, and trucks, etc all 20m underground. You also get to keep the very attractive orange overalls - Merry Christmas Peter and Brendan!
They also have a large lake, a golf course, and no sunday trading for Coles and Woolworths. I am sure QLD will catch-up one day - maybe have a big year and add day-light saving as well! Sorry Sue.
Speaking of golf we won't be speaking about golf again. 2 more rounds to dad which leaves him 4-1 up and all hope lost for me.
Also best to avoid dinner at the Irish club - scallops at prawns, Pork medallions are something strange-looking, 300gm rump is closer to 85, and pepper corns look like mushrooms, in sauce form anyway.
For those concerned the shower clock was reset.
I didn't see Pat Rafter, Greg Norman, Scott Prince, Nathan Fien, Gerard Denton, Carl Webb, Lindy Chamberlain or any other of the noted famous people of Mount Isa. Not even a big shark, tennis racquet or dingo. A tad disappointing I thought.
