Met a couple from Miami (he Cuban, she Ecuador) at a taxi stand and jointly negotiated a tour of Recife and Olinda. Price was significantly less than the ship tour price. The driver's English was not great but, with our partner's Spanish, we got along fine. We had stops at several Recife sites including the main market, Republic Plaza, Justice Palace, Governors' Palace and numerous bridges. Recife has a Dutch heritage from the several decades in the 1600s that the Dutch controlled the area before it was retaken by the Portuguese. It is known as the Venice of Brazil with numerous waterways and bridges. Then to Olinda, one of Brazil's best preserved colonial cities. Well preserved and maintained. Then a tour of Recife's beach suburbs, a 20 km. stretch south of Recife with continuous beaches and condos, worth from US$ 1 to 5 million. Although there are some slums, Recife is generally neat and clean, certainly much better than Belem. Glad we met the Miami couple. We will be partnering with them to do other tours.
