We only had a ½ day in Maceio and made the most of it. Population of 1 million, Maceio has some industry, including a large petrochemical complex, but is mainly known for its beaches. About 250 km. of beaches stretch north and south of the City. Beautiful sand and clean beaches. Indeed the city appears quite clean, even in some of the less developed areas. There are plenty of modern towers, usually on the beaches. It is popular with wealthy Brazillians from nearby large cities who use Maceio as vacation and weekend escapes. A good mixture of old and new churches, theaters, government buildings, etc. Many good markets with quite good quality products. People are quite friendly and clerks not pushy. We again joined with the Miami couple we met yesterday and negotiated a 1 ½ hour city and beaches tour with a local taxi driver. Very ebullient fellow who is proud of his city. He did not speak English but had reasonable Spanish and communicated well with the Miami couple who provided explanations to us. Great tour and only US$50 for all of us.
