Today was to be Jewish ghetto day but a bit of rain and would have been lots of walking so change of plans - off to explore Wawel Castle, the Gestapo HQ museum and back streets of the old town. But first a visit to the nearby farmers market and store for brekkie provisions then a cooked brekkie at the apartment. Didn't eventually head off till about 1pm
Wawel Castle is a massive and magnificent structure overlooking the old town. We opted to just wander the grounds rather than go to any of the exhibition rooms because there was a long wait for tickets to them and we are not very patient when it comes to museum exhibitions. Any way we were able to tour the Cathedral (along with heaps of school kids who are everywhere in Krakow on excursions) which is small but magnificent and we visited the crypt of Lech Walenska?? and his wife who were killed in a 2010 plane crash.
We tacked onto a free guided tour for a bit to get a bit of info then went to the expansive and impressive internal courtyard / cloisters and then exited through the dragons den to see the fire breathing Wawel dragon (legend)
A good walk around the old town to the Gestapo HQ museum where the Gestapo set themselves up in the war and to the underground cells where they kept and tortured mainly political prisoners - very sombre
More walking the side streets of the old town with little cafes and bars with lots of character
Tonight dinner in an underground cellar restaurant serving traditional polish food - out of the way but very popular and very casual - go up to order food and get food and clear your own table afterwards. We ordered too much (surprise surprise) but it was excellent - 3 mains, a salad and 2 wines for $20
What a great day getting into the Krakow culture
