Local Travels
On the Tuesday before Easter, we decided to explore the town in which we live - Christchurch. Christchurch has a pretty impressive looking priory (big church!) that dates back to 800 AD. Many churches in England like to have a claim to fame, and the priory is no different - at 311 feet long, it is reputed to be the longest 'parish' church in England.
In addition to the priory, there are a couple of ruins to explore - the Constable's House and a Castle keep, as well as something called a 'ducking stool'. Information located outside the Ducking Stool Tea Rooms (cash in on the "tourism" trade!) says that "the Ducking Stool was a form of punishment for scolds and nagging wives used during the 15th-18th centuries. The culprit who had been sentenced by the Court Leet, was raised and lowered into the mill stream as often as the sentence directed in order to cool her immoderate heat." Apparently sometimes the punishment proved fatal, the unfortunate women dying of shock!
The next day we took a train to Southampton (only 30 minutes away) to try and find me some shoes for work. Southampton is a funny place - you probably know it as the place where the Titanic sailed from, and basically, that's all there is to it! The port of Southampton is a very busy one, but apart from that it doesn't seem to offer a lot. In saying that however, I did find a pair of shoes for work, and we finally found a nice coffee at a Starbucks there (after a few weeks of Nige searching for a good coffee!).
We've also been to check out the Tank Museum lately, located about an hour away. I won't go into the boring detail but you can look at the photos to see what I mean by Tank Museum...
