So, after a few months of pretty much no planning, Nige and I are finally here in the United Kingdom.I've never been great at keeping a journal/diary, but I'm hoping to get onto this blog fairly regularly to keep you up-to-date.
And so it begins …
We'd chosen to fly to the UK with Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates. The journey from Sydney to London (coach and planes) went quite well, except that Nige's entertainment system stopped working after a few hours. There were no complaints from me about this however, as the plane wasn't full so he could move to another seat a couple of rows ahead, meaning that I had two seats to myself for about 10 hours! The 4 hour wait on single metal seats at Abu Dhabi airport was a little painful after a 14 hour flight from Sydney, but the terminal is being upgraded so hopefully on our way home things will be a little more comfortable.
We flew into Heathrow last Thursday morning, flight weary but ready to hit London town for a day or two. After negotiating Nige onto his first tube journey, we managed to find our accommodation in Victoria easily enough, before turning into tourists for a few hours, checking out Piccadilly Circus, Regent St, Oxford St, the London Eye from a distance, and Big Ben.Unfortunately we couldn't stay awake all day though so we ended up sleeping most of the afternoon away. However, a drink and some dinner called, so we wandered up to Victoria's 'CBD' to meet my good mate Collard from Newcastle for a beer and some Italian food.
Friday brought us more tourist activity, namely Westminster Abbey (with quite an admission fee these days!), Downing St, Horse Guard's Parade, St James' Park, Buckingham Palace, the war memorials at Hyde Park Corner, and the brilliant Tower Bridge (probably my favourite location in London!).
After picking up our ridiculously heavy backpacks, we made our way slightly north to St Albans to my uncle (dad's brother) and auntie's lovely home for a couple of nights and a couple of beers at a couple of English pubs!
We are now in Bournemouth staying with my auntie (dad's sister) and uncle for a week or so while we try to sort ourselves out with some kind of relaxed plan re: working and living arrangements. The jet lag is still hanging around much to Nige's bewilderment, but we're trying not to let it get the better of us in the day time.Hopefully in time I will get better at this (I can't even stand reading back the dribble I've written!), and I will als add more photos in the next few days while we still have internet access.
