After much deliberation whilst in Chengdu, we decided that it would be cool to do a cruise down the Yangtze River to see the Three Gorges and the Little Three Gorges. There were a number of choices with regards to the cruises but the English one was extortionate and significantly above our tight little budget so in the end we decided on a 4 day Chinese cruise ship which actually turned out to be bags of fun!
The boat made a number of stops at various touristy points along the way and we'd decided up front which ones we wanted to pay to get off and see. So, on our second morning, we joined the masses of pushing locals and saw the Ghost Town which involved trekking up a small hill and seeing lots of beautiful shrines and monuments.
We also joined the excursions to the Little Three Gorges on the third day, which provided absolutely stunning scenery and a very relaxing slow boat ride, the Jiuwan stream on the fourth day which we got to in Dragon Boats, even though it was pouring of rain, and the Three Gorges Dam on the final day.
As well as some of the amazing scenery along the way, our journey was also enhanced by the experience of sharing a room on the boat with 2 random Chinese guys who spoke not a word of English! However, every night they persevered with actions and drawings to communicate with us over a few beers! It was such a good laugh!
What wasn't such a good laugh was that one of the Chinese men snored so badly that over the course of the 3 nights we got such little sleep that we were exhausted by the time we reached our final destination! Here's to a good rest in Guillin........
