Finally got to Hong Kong on the last day in April, just before the 3 day Chinese May holiday! What to say about Hong Kong....wow! What an amazing city!
We had heard that Hong Kong was really expensive so only gave ourselves about 3 days there but in hindsight wish that we'd had more time cos we only scratched the surface. We were so lucky with the weather whilst we were there as well which added to the experience, as the skyline at night was crystal and day trips to the islands were lovely!
We arrived farily late on day one and decided to have a stroll along the waterside of Kowloon looking across at the skyline of Hong Kong Island and walking the avenue of stars, although we must admit we had no idea who any of the people were. except for Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan! As it was a holiday there were free concerts by the Hong Kong orchestra by the promenade at 8pm each night in time with the light show so we sat there on the first night and got some great photos!
The second day was a bit busier and, after reading our trusty Lonely Planet book, decided as loyal Scots that we must visit Aberdeen, even if just for the photos! We then got a ferry from Aberdeen to Lamma Island which was very picturesque with beaches and no cars. The ferry back took us to Hong Kong Island from where we took a bus up to Victoria Peak and viewed the Island from atop. It was such an awesome day!
We also managed to squeeze in a day trip to Macau which I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Hong Kong! It was amazing! We've decided to go back there for a holiday once our travelling days are over! The Island is so contrasting with old Portugese colonial buildings coupled with massive new casinos over the place! We also watched in terror as people bungy jumped off the Macau Tower, apparently the highest bungy in the world! We decided to call it a day however after losing 40GBP in the MGM grand!
We only had a few hours on 0ur last day so we decided to try a restaurant which had been recommended to us which is actually the cheapest Michelin star restaurant in the world! After being barked at by the scary Maitre De to come back in 2 hours we had a wander then went back at the allotted time to be seated! The food was amazing and anyone visiting Hong Kong should try it out! Luxury dining at minimal price!
Lastly, I can't write a blog about Hong Kong without mentioning the infamous Chungking mansions!! We stayed there at the Singh guesthouse and random doesn't even begin to describe it! The metal bars on the doors, combined with the toilet which you had to put a shower down to flush and the pungent curry smell were enough to say the experience wasn't exactly pleasant! Oh well, it was an experience!
