Hi there everyone,
Have just completed the first 2 weeks at work and am really enjoying it so far but am a bit frazzled by all the new stuff I need to take on board. Its a modern unit with 10 labour rooms, 3 waterbirth rooms and a 36 bedded postnatal/antenatal ward with mostly single rooms and a few double rooms. The patients tend to stay in 2-5 days following delivery, depending on type of delivery and breast feeding rates are very high.Am on orientation programme for 3 weeks and will then go on to working 3 long days a week. The early morning rush hour in Auckland has shocked me starting at 6am and I have had to modify my route with a few wrong turns here and there but its still taking me 35 mins which is a little more travelling than I anticipated, but time will tell.
The staff at North Shore hospital have been nothing but friendly and welcoming and I have met lots of midwives from the UK which is reassuring and I am sure I will fit in well once I get chance to settle in.They very much focus on lots of training over here. This week I did my mandatory update and was thinking of Marie and smiling during the neonatal update saying one gin and tonic, two gin and tonics etc.... to myself.
Lucy was in her swimming gala this week and managed to come 1st,2nd and 3rd in her heats and was so pleased with herself bless her!!Katie's turn is next week so we will see how she does.
Katie went on her school trip to a nature reserve and Andy was able to go along as a volunteer which included taking the kids in his car(don't seem to have school buses here)They did orienteering, radio controls and the highlight of the day was kayaking, not sure who enjoyed it the most actually......
The weather continues to be glorious now we are heading into autumn, its still about 25 degrees some days but with less humidity so a few days a week we head down to the beach at the bottom of the road after school/work to chill out. They spend hours in the sea whilst I get some peace and read a book, total bliss!! We are also making the most of our BBQ and are still able to eat out on the deck most days.
Have also enjoyed a few trips to some bays a little further north than us( as in the pictures above.)
Well hope all is well over in UK, have heard the spring is bringing you some sunshine??
Take care
Lots of Love Louisa xxx
