We boarded the overnight train in Hanoi at 7pm sharing our cabin with Bex and Laura. We slept well but as we woke up Dara came to inform us that from 12am-5am we were sat on the tracks which meant we were already 5hrs delayed.. (no wonder we slept well!)..To be honest most people were moaning and couldnt wait to get off of the train us and Laura were enjoying a lie-in! We couldnt remember the last time we could just lay in bed, chat and snooze if we wanted.. result! We finally arrived in Hue at 2pm and headed straight for the Gold Hotel.
Time for a quick shower before meeting in the lobby to take cabs to the Imperial Citadel. When we arrived we met our new local tour guide Mr Tam...he is hilarious! He makes jokes, tells you what your personality is like, impressions and all this whilst perorming tai chi or if your are lukcy the splits! He was just what we needed to keep us interested in The Citadel (where the kings used to live in Hue). We said good bye to Mr Tam, but not for long as he was our guide for our motorbike tour the following day.
That evening Dara took us to a restaurant called Lac Thien. It is run by a man who is deaf and mute and intrepid encourages their tours to eat a meal there. It is such a quirky place...you can all write on the walls in permenant markers and everyones gets a handmade bottle opener from the great man himself! Once we got the bottle openers and were taught how to use them he handed around photo albums... hundreds of people from all over the world had sent him photos of them with these famous openers infront of well known sites: Ifel Tower, sydney harbour bridge, Big Ben etc etc.. It was great to meet him and Lisa's sign language came in handy.. she told him that he had a beautiful family and thanked him very much!
The next morning we got up early for our motorbike tour.. now if you have seen the pictures of all of the motorbikes in the cities you will understand why Lisa was nervous riding her first motorbike here! hahaha... It was greeeeat!!!!! We spent 5 hrs touring around the Vietnamese countryside stopping at The Purfume river, Pagoda and the Royal tomb.. Our last stop was at a nunnery for a gorgoeus vegetarian lunch! We were sad that the tour had come to an end but we were all buzzing from our 2 days in Hue..and it was time to make our way to Hoi An.. thats is where we shall meet Ang and Rich from our Kiwi Bus! cant wait!
