I swallowed some of the Great Barrier Reef!
We spent most of the day driving to get the Airlie Beach, but did get the chance to go out and sample some Australian specialities: I tried Barramundi, which is one of Australia's native fish, and tastes delicious! It is softer than other white fish, and has a really delicate taste. I'll be missing that when I go up to Sheffield!
The next day, we went on the Camira, which is a world-class sailing catamaran. I was a bit dubious about going on it, as the last time I went on a similar vessel, I was dry hurling all the way! Luckily, it was really calm waters, and there was only a slight lilt that we could all handle. The cat took us across the Bay to the Whitehaven Islands, which are a group of beautiful islands on the outer Barrier Reef.
The first island we all got onto a James Bond style inflatable motor boat, complete with snorkelling gear, including flippers and wet suit that was very uncomfortable! Being coordinationally challenged, I also decided to wear a life-jacket, as that made it easier for me to stay afloat, and I could concentrate on where I wanted to go! Snorkelling was great fun: once I'd got used to not breathing through my nose! There were loads of different kinds of coral, which would all shimmer and float in time to the waves. There were also some fish that dart in and out, including a sergeant major fish, and several large parrotfish, which I enjoyed following around!
Then, we stopped off at Whitehaven Beach, which had bright white sand that felt like you were lying on icing sugar, it was so soft and fine. We spent time playing frisbee in the sea, which made catching the thing a lot easier, as you can imagine(!) We spent the day eating the free food they kept offering, and I drank like a racehorse, as I'm coming down rapidly with some bug! I'm just hoping that my photos from my underwater disposable camera turn out well!
