After three days of 800km/day drives, we're almost at Darwin!
We spent day before yesterday relaxing in the Daly Waters pub, which is somewhat of an institution, and obviously is run by people are eccentric in a quintessential aussie way: there was a thong (flip flop!) tree, various women had donated bras over the years to pin up, some of which were greying nicely! It was a place with real character, and the food was great!
Katherine Gorge promised a lot, and came highly recommended. Unfortunately, I was one of the group who didn't get to see as much as I'd liked, as there'd been an accident, and the tours were running late. Nevertheless, we still got to go on a hike, and see some of the sights from higher up, which I like to think of as a cheaper helicopter ride!
This morning, we went for a swim in Florence Falls, which were beautifully untouched, and have been a welcome relief from the heat. Especially, as we had our second bush camp (which was luxurious by comparison, as it had a toilet!). We then went onto see the largest termites in the world, seeing the cathedral termites, who build 5m+ mounds that all have small holes that can be opened and closed, and have a cross shape, all to capture the correct amount of heat and moisture that allow the little critters to live.
Even more impressive was the magnetic mounds, which don't attract small change as I presumed, but are all aligned north-south so that they capture the most amount of sun in the day, except when the sun is at it's highest point. The collection of mounds looked really eerie, like gravestones! Either way though, they're clever little critters!
By tonight, we'll be in Darwin, where we'll have the luxuries of a bed and a hostel, I can't wait!
