Today we headed to beautiful Cinque Terre, which meant leaving our Venice apartment at 8am. As most of you know, I am not a morning person, so describing my mood as grumpy was probably being nice.
Our day included a luxurious 2 hour train ride to Florence, including free water & juices, cookies and reclining seats (not as common on trains as planes). In Florence we made a dash to the far end of the platform and grabbed another train to La Spezia. In comparison to the first train, this train felt like it was on the verge of breaking down. Taking all into account, we were able to make it to Riomaggiore (the first of the 5 cities) safely.
We then proceeded to hike up to steep streets to find out hotel, which was a small hotel room, barely big enough for us and our bags. Poor Teree would have to spent the night on a small cot, in a room that was the size of the closet.
After freshening up, we walked down the main street and sat on the rocks along the water's edge watching the sunset.
We finished the day by sitting in a rustic restaurant, sharing platters of grilled calamari & tomatoes, anchovies, shrimp dumplings and panna cotta. We then went back to the hotel and shared a couple more glasses of wine, the perfect way to finish off an Italian evening.
