We woke up early this morning, heading to the Amalfi Coast. Having finished off multiple bottles of wine last night, only having 6 hours of sleep and carrying our suitcases down 40 stairs (I carried Robyn's too, so that's 80 stairs!!), we were a little worse for wear, but we made it to the train station, ready for the first of 4 trains of the day. After a little excitement and confusion at the station (and a last minute change of platforms, forcing us to run up and down stairs with our bags) we were on our way.
We made it to La Spezia (our first connection) and lugged our bags to the elevator. As Robyn and Genny were coming down I realized that our train left from the same platform, so we ended up riding the elevator up and down (we did have an hour to kill).
We finally got on our second train, the longest of the day, only to find that there wasn't any luggage compartment and that people were in our seats. with each stop we moved a little, either the luggage or ourselves, or both. The train was finally full by the time we got to Pisa and poor Robyn and Teree were stuck with suitcases under their feet for the remaining 3 hours.
After 9 hours of travelling we made it to Sorrento (Amalfi Coast), only to discover that it was raining (but stopped as soon as we got off the train).
After freshening up at the hotel, we went for dinner at a restaurant on the hill called il Borga. The restaurant had a car that came and picked us up and dropped us of at the hotel, and we all shared seafood linguine, swordfish pasta and grilled mixed meats. Dinner was great, with a fabulous view of the city. So far, a great start to the Amalfi Coast.
Tomorrow we're heading to Pompei....
Today's quote: Genny telling us about her daily commute to work "I get in the car in the garage, park in a parkade and never see the sun. I had Vitamin D deficiency...in Florida!!! The freaken sunshine state!!!"
