Wednesday 22nd May
I had a bass nights sleep. I could get to sleep last night and then slowly people kept entering the room so there was constant movement until gone midnight. Once I did manage to fall asleep I did remain asleep until my alarm. Once the alarm went off I got up, showered an dressed. Most of the room had already left. I put a few things in my bag before heading down for breakfast. I had the normal crumpets, banana and tea. I watch a morning breakfast TV show. I think I would miss the pure cheese and tac of New Zealand breakfast TV.
Just after 9am I went to check if my new room was ready as I had to change rooms for my last night (they were cleaning the other room), the room was ready, so I moved my bags down a level to my new room. It was a 4 bed ensuite. There was already a girl in the room and she was asleep. The room was much smaller than the last with hardy any space and no lockers. I bumped my bags, hung up my clothes and checked I had taken everything with me. Once I was sorted I went down and checked out of my old room. It was around 9.30am and the Te Papa museum didn't open until 10am, so I headed to the post office as I wanted to send some things home. It took my a while to find the post office, but once there I packaged up my things and sent them on their way. It cost $32 which wasn't as bad as I thought, although I had some things to send back in Auckland too and they would be more costly. Once I was done at the Post office it was nearly 10am, so I headed to the museum.
The museum was massive, it had 6 levels. The first was an outdoor bush walk, the second was about animals, third was to do with the planet, the fourth was about Maori culture and the past of New Zealanders, the fifth and sixth were galleries. The levels were interactive and really informative. I had a great time looking around, even with the hundreds of schools kids running and shouting about. The information was easy to read and follow. I meandered around the first 2 levels reading the information. I was really enjoying the past few weeks learning about geography. By the time I got to level 4 my motivation was wavering. I found the Maori information quite hard to follow and it was in no logical order. Through level 4, I walked around but was more picky what I read and skimmed through a lot of things. Level 4 and 5 were simply galleries and I skimmed through these quickly. Once I was done in the museum I made my way back down the levels and had a quick look around the shop before collecting my bag. I was just before 2pm, so I headed back to the hostel for lunch. The weather didn't supply the predicted rain but it was more cloudy than yesterday and there was more of a chill in the air. Once back at the hostel I met Olivia and Ben who were just heading to the museum. I had my lunch whilst watching the TV in the lounge. I finished off my crackers, cheese and ham (I ate a lot but I wanted to finish my food), I also had an apple and fruit bar. After I'd finished my tea I headed back out. It was now 2.30pm and I headed to the City and Sea museum. This museum gave a good overview of the history of Wellington, boats and how things have changes. I found it really interesting to read the information. I read the first few paragraphs of each section and would continue if it seemed interesting. I spent just under 2 hours walking around and reading.
Once I was done, I headed back into the city centre. I went back to my sushi shop and picks up some sushi for that evening and a box for lunch tomorrow as it was cheap ($6.50 for 12 bits). I then continued on. I grabbed some postcard form Wellington.
I also looked into some gift shops as I still needed a present for my dad. I went New World to pick up some fruit and snacks for tomorrow's trip. I then took a long route home looking into a few shops. I got back around 5.30pm and headed to my room. I sat down and ate my sushi and cookie (which was meant to be for pudding). Just after 6.20pm I headed down to the bar for the free snack meal which was chilli with rice. I sat with Ben and Olivia and we chatted for a while. The Stray bus soon arrived and in came an influx of people to the bar. Sarah arrived and ordered her food. We sat together and chatted. Soon Sarah went to check in as she was off to see some friends. I went to cook some food and chatted to Pinky for a while on my way out.
I needed to cook the broccoli (from the free food), mushrooms, onion and tuna I had and didn't want to take with me. I cooked them up with some noodles. I wasn't really hungry but I didn't want to waste them. I cooked them up and sat an ate in the lounge. I sat there for the evening watching TV and writing my diary. Just after 9.30pm I headed for my room to have a shower and get ready for the early start. I decided to shower in the evening so my towel could dry and I could have a little extra sleep in the morning. When I got to my room the other 2 were out but it was obvious that I could hear the music from the bar was very clear and loud in our room. After my shower I started writing y group email for a bit before settling down to sleep.
