Wednesday 8th May 2013
Following the walk I slept really well, I didn't even hear Martin come into the room. My hip and heels were painful every time I turned which wasn't helpful. My alarm came as an unwelcome sound. I got up, dressed and soon others were up in my room. I packed my bags and stripped my bed before I headed for breakfast. I made myself a cup of tea and had my banana and crumpets. The 2 Swiss girls were having their breakfast, but I wasn't feeling sociable, so sat and watched the news on TV. After breakfast I washed plates and went to put my bags in the bus. I checked my room once again and then waited for those late few as normal. Today we were heading to Wellington. We left just after 8am. The ride out the National Park was beautiful, watching the trees, mountains and bush fly past. I stayed awake for the start of the ride but then I feel asleep. I was woken up by Pinky announcing we were in Taihape. Here whilst he was filling up the bus we had a wellie (or gum boot) throwing contest. This town was apparently known to its gum boots. We had a practice throw each and then we had our actual throw. The boys and girls had a completion between each group. It was a laugh seeing everyone trying to throw. Some of the lads managed to throw as far as the lane, yet some managed to throw it out of the lane onto the rail track. After the competition I grabbed a cup of tea from a one man coffee trailer and got back on the bus.
I felt odd today, not necessarily ill but just generally quite down and that I didn't want to be sociable and just wanted my own company, which was weird as I think my mood was related to not hearing from anyone and feeling like I was nothing but a burden to people.
Back on the road we went. The scenery was so stunning, vast mountain rangers out of the windows and rolling hills covered in animals grazing. I could have taken so many photos of what I saw.
I carried on trying to doze on the bus. I was woken up as it was announced we were going through Bulls, a small town the Smiths had told me about. I thought we might stop there as it was on our itinerary, but alas we didn't. But we were told about the shops (which the Smith's told me about) which some ending in 'bul'. Like the accountants were accountable, the doctors were curable, the police were constable. But we carried on driving and I watched the world to by and sleeping. Just before 12 we stopped at Levin for our lunch break. I didn't need anything so went for a walk. It was a small town and we had 30mins. I went for a walk and ended up buying a scone, which looked tasty (not good for trying to eat better). I then walked to the playground, which Pinky had said was the best in the world, which was slightly disappointing after its build up, it was just a large playground. I walked around for a bit before heading back to the bus. Once back on I ate my lunch (apple, crackers and fruit bar, I had my carrot earlier). We then drove for about 30min to another small town where there was outlet shops. Pinky said there was a good Icebreakers there and asked if we wanted to go as those going to the South Island might want some extra layers, people said yes. I had a look around the shop and another few. They had nice things that were reduced a lot, but I didn't need anything and didn't really have the money. But I did buy mum a scarf. We waited for the bus and after some were late again (it was annoying today, as we lost 30-40mins for people being late), we headed off again. It was just over an hour to Wellington. I did my usual of sleep and watch. Throughout the day Pinky had tried to be witty and funny (to which he was) but he was getting nothing from people on the bus, I tried a couple of times but I don't think I was loud enough.
As we drove into Wellington, we drove past the port, the museum and various other buildings. We arrived at the hostel, we jumped off and booked into Base hostel. I was still feeling grumpy. I was with the 2 Swiss girls and the Slovakian. Once settled in my room, the other 3 were going for a walk around the city so I joined in. I didn't want to go to the museum as I was hopeful to go on my way back through and see it properly. We headed off into the city and walked down a street. The others decided to go to the museum so I went my own way by myself. I walked around for a bit and realised there wasn't too much to do around, just a lot of industry and companies. I carried on walking hoping to find some wifi, I knew I had no messages but it was nice to have some faith someone might have. I failed and was walking around in circles. I found a supermarket and started shopping, I didn't need much as we were told we would have a supermarket stop tomorrow. I ended up with a handful of stuff. I went to the self checkout and put things through and did my usual of cheating with nuts and veg. Once I paid and was on my way out I was stopped and taken to a room. I panicked and felt sick, I had been rumbled. The man checked things and noted what was wrong, my heart was racing, what would happen to me. The man was serious and he took me to a cashier, my food was re-proceed and I needed to pay the difference. I was then given a notice that I wasn't allowed in the shop for 2 years. The police would be notified but it wouldn't go on my record, but I would be in trouble if I did anything else in the city. I was so shaken as I left, feeling embarrassed and guilty, all for $2. I walked out and around town, I didn't take too long for me to stop shaking, but I still felt bad. My day left me feeling horribly down and depressed. I had decided not to stay in Wellington long this time and stay on the way back up, then that would leave me time if I needed extra days anywhere else, and just hope there was some newbies on the bus. I walked around for a bit and brought some sushi in an attempt to cheer me up. I then found a coffee shop with wifi and brought a cup of tea. It would have been nearly the same to buy 24hrs at the hostel. But I sat and replied to a few emails (from parents, Granny Jack, Sue and Kath), still nothing from my friends. This didn't help things. I sat there for an hour checking mail and pennies.
I then left and went back to my hostel and sat with the TV whilst they watched the end of the film. None of my bus were there. I watched the film, ate my sushi and wrote my diary. When that film finished another started (it was Sky TV). Soon a few people had come to sit around and they overtook the TV and put 'The Lord of the Rings' (slightly rude without asking). I sat and watched it for a while before making my dinner. I made my dinner and continued to watch the film. A few were going down to the bar for a few drinks. I went to my room and read for a while before the others came into my room and we headed down to the basement for a few drinks. At first I didn't have a proper drink and had some cordial. After playing a bit of table football I got a Southern Comfort, lemonade and lime. Then the bar man brought over some home made shots which we had 2 of and then Pinky brought myself and the 2 Swiss girls a Jäger Bomb. This was be most I had to drink in a long time. The drinks had cheered me up from earlier. I went to bed just before 12am and read for a while before heading to sleep!
