Monday 20th May
My nights sleep wasn't great, it took me a while to get to sleep and then I woke up often in the night, mainly due to dreams. So I was awake when my alarm went off at 8am. Once up I had a shower and got dressed. By the time I was back in the room everyone else was up so I packed up my things. I then went for the free breakfast the hostel provided, it was just toast with toppings. I had 2 pieces with my tea, one with honey and one with marmalade. It was so nice to have something other than peanut butter. Slowly people emerged and Olivia and Ben soon joined the table. After a while I went back to have a third bit of toast as I was still hungry.
After breakfast and I had washed up my things, I put my bags in the living room and checked out. I had arranged to meet Ben and Olivia at 12.30pm back at the hostel to get the ferry. Before then, it was 10am, I was off venturing around Picton. I went to a cash machine and the post office to get some stamps. I then wondered around the main street looking in all the little gift and craft shops. I brought a postcard so I could reply to Arnie's wedding invite. The shops had some lovely things in. It made me smile when I saw Jade necklaces like min for $130 (ok they were a little nicer, but I did carve my own). Once I had looked around all the shops, I headed to the Dutch bakery next to our hostel and grabbed a scone for the ferry. I continued my walk and went through the remembrance garden. The plaques for those died in WW1 and WW2 had some of the same surnames. I walked along the waters edge for a while. I considered of going to museum, but I didn't think $5 would be worth it. It was coming up to 11am, so I headed back to one of the craft shop to get Alice a present (kiwi salt and pepper pots) before heading back round to the waters edge. Here I sat and drafted replies to the emails I had received over the few days. I sat there making the most of the sun (as the weather was meant to be turning). Just after noon I headed back to he hostel where Olivia and Ben were eating lunch. I gave them my hot chocolate, as I would never finish it in time and filled up my water bottles. We left the hostel around 12.25pm to walk to the ferry. We needed to be there by 1pm to check in. It was only a 10-15min walk to the ferry, but with bags it seemed longer. Once I got to the terminal, I brought my ticket, put my bag through and checked in. I then sat down and fiddled on my phone for a while using their free Internet. I munched on my peanuts and managed to finish them off. I also popped my sea sick pill whilst waiting. It was about a 45min wait until the shuttle came and collected us around 1.30pm to take us to the boat (the terminal and boat were a bit far from each other).
I sat on the too deck on some sofas. Before the boat left port I had munched my way through plenty of crackers just out of boredom. Once we started moving I went out on deck and took some photos. I noticed that on the too vehicle deck there was a few cattle lorries and you could clearly see the animals all packed in their little compartments (there was no roof to the lorries). Once back in I redeemed by free cup of tea vouchers and sat down to eat my scone. I wasn't hungry but wanted to eat. I had been feeling normal recently after having a few days of feeling a bit icky, but today I felt a bit off again. I sat on my sofa once I'd finished checking my phone, sending emails, writing Arnie's card, reading my travel book and reading the news on my phone. I also felt myself doze at times. Around 4pm, when we were just over half way through I could feel the boat against the waves and this made my feel a bit funny. I continued to mess around on my phone until about 5.40pm when we docked in wellington. I climbed off the boat and went to reclaim our bags. A taxi man said it was just a 5min walk to nomads where the other 2 were staying and I check on hostel world and they seemed one of the cheapest places. It took about 10-15mins walk to get to the hostel and luckily Ben had his phone for directions. I check in and booked just the one night as it was much more expensive than I was expecting. I dumped my bags and went to the bar for a free evening snack, margarita pizza (you got one slice, or could upgrade to 2 slices for another $2). I just had the free one slice. I sat there and ate and when I was nearly finished Olivia and Ben walked in. They ordered and sat with me. We sat there a while and chatted whilst they ate. After a while I went off to find a shop for milk. The lady at reception directed me to New World, which I couldn't go to, but didn't have the guts to tell her I was barred from there. So I walked about the streets and found a small corner shop and got me some milk. I went back to the hostel, as I was a little disorientated in the city in the dark. Once back I put my washing on, made some noodles and tea and sat watching a film in the lounge. I am clueless what film it was but it seemed a little western. I wrote my diary whilst watching. After my washing was done and I put it onto dry and I went up to my room and sorted out what I wanted to post back and put my valuable in a locker and locked it. I went to collect my washing and on the way back up paid for my second night (the hostel seemed nice and it was within my budget and it would be less hassle) and I asked about the Mt Victoria lookout which was about a 2 hour round trip and gave beautiful views of the city. Tuesday was meant to be the best for weather so I needed to do the outdoor things then. Once I was sorted, I got changed for bed and carried on writing my diary. I was in a 10 bed dorm, although it wasn't full. Most of the room were ready for bed at this time too. I messed around on my phone until 11pm and then tried to sleep.
