Following on from my last journal entry I had a good cry and went to bed...sleeping always makes things better!
Yesterday was such a full on day but a much better one! We had 2 dress and tech runs for our premier show that night! A full run through is a massive feat. We have the dressers there to assist us with quick changes, they are Phillapino men that help us to get dressed...a guys dream perhaps? There is also the production team which includes various people in charge of sound, lighting, props and sets and then the seamstresses to help with any costume malfunctions. We use a lift which is in the middle of the stage which when we have finished with the spanish number takes us down to the 'pit' to get us ready for the irish number. In some of the dances the lift is open so you have to be so cautious where you step....it is pretty scary because its about a 4 meter drop! After the 2 run throughs we got copious notes about what we are doing wrong...Ohh man!!! It is tiring to hear it but knowing you are performing that night really makes that little light shine at the end of what seemed like the longest tunnel!!
Premier show! It was finally here! We had our first show at 8.15pm...talk about being nervous! My first big professional show! I actually made it! Everything ran very smoothy...a couple mistakes but overall I was very proud of myself! The second show was the one all the previous dancers came too. Wow...talk about pressure! I tried not to think about it too much because honestly I make more mistakes if I do! We finished our finale piece and bowed and actually got a standing ovation...wow! It made me well up a little bit because after all the negativity the last few weeks praise was just what I needed! The crowd LOVED the irish dance (YUCK!) We actually had an older couple come up to us afterwards to let us know they were big irish dance fans and we were a very close second to the professionals. Haha! Fake it till you make it hey!
After the show we were on a MASSIVE high! We popped open a bottle of champagne and all cheered over a fantastic show! Even though we were exhausted (4 full run throughs of an hour long show in one day really takes it out of you) we went to the crew bar to celebrate! This is where my story actually gets interesting hehe. We met the officers who seem to take a fond interest to all the dancers. All very nice but not keen on any of them! I got chatting to one of the cadets on board, Gavin. A very awkward 20 year old from New Zealand who very obviously had a thing for me. The poor guys face kept going red every time I tried to have a conversation with him. Poor kid! Everything on the ship has an order of how things work...dancers go with officers. If an one officer has more stripes (meaning they more superior) then the other and they are both keen on the same girl then the one with more stripes gets the girl. No questions asked that is just how it works! They invited us to a wine and cheese night..in other words pick your officer night. Its tomorrow night so I will let you know what goes on!
Hope everything is well!
