Yesterday was our cheap day to combat the horrific spending spree we had undertaken the past week. In the morning we sorted out all of our photos and neglected blog entries, willed the weather to improve, then in the afternoon we picnicked outside the ferris wheel adjacent to Darling Harbour and mulled over what to do in the afternoon. It seemed the best option was to visit one of the many cheap museums/galleries, so as it was close, we picked the PowerHouse Musuem. Reminded us much of the V&A in London and ThinkTank in Birmingham - this massive warehouse had far too many exhibitions to properly get through in one day. We saw the design section, with chairs by Marc Newson (google him+car) and corsets which Claire wanted desperately to try on. Liam's fave part was the section about steam engines.... blatantly because it all related back to Birmingham. :)
Today, we firstly had to shift all of our stuff to the next hostel. Since checkout was half nine - horribly early for a traveller - we were both pretty groggy dragging our bags onto the bus. We didn't make many friends on the way as we were such wideloads, neither did anyone appreciate us taking up two seats each. Had to be done though. Our next hostel is called Big, and calls itself 'Luxury Budget Accomodation.' Not quite sure how that works but oh well. Either way it's quite possibly the nicest hostel we've stayed in so far - only one cockroach found so far, and it was already dead which is a bonus.
So we dumped our stuff, and having had a few hiccups paying (it would help if we had enough money on our cards) we were ready to go and enjoy the day. First up on the agenda was to go and buy a cake to celebrate Kate's (Claire's best friend) birthday. We found a little shop which sold yummy slices of mud cake (tasty) and hiked up onto the steps of the Opera House and somehow managed to light all 19 candles, sing happy birthday, blow it out and eat it before anyone accused us of arson. It actually made a huge fire though - the candles all sort of merged into one so we didn't waste time extinguishing the fire and tucking into the cake :)
In the afternoon we walked through the Botanical Gardens and had lunch watching all the runners go through the park - Sydney must be the fittest city in the world, every other pedestrian was running a marathon! Then, we walked to the opposite side of the Quay and made use of our free pass to the Bridge Pylon Museum and lookout point. We got excellent photos and realised that great views wouldn't be the reason you would climb the bridge as they were accessible from here - but all the same it was cool to get another high up panorma of Circular Quay and the city.
On the way down we decided to amuse our inner child by going to Luna Park on the opposite side of the river - the only theme park in New South Wales (?!). We walked right across the bridge and down to the water front - only to find out that the park was closed until Friday. Lovely. Instead, we caught a boat back to Circular Quay from a dock near the park, and sauntered back to the hostel, via getting some food, to do some much needed -washing and an early night for tomorrow (!!!).
