Today, we bit the bullet and despite money worries, decided that it was absolutely NECESSARY to climb Sydney Harbour Bridge. And we're SO glad we did! The views were spectacular (and the photos were hideously expensive) but the whole experience was one we will never forget. And added to this that the weather was beautiful and we caught the beginning of the sunset during the climb, lovely!
When we woke up we saw the sky was blue and the sun was out, so we dashed down to Circular Quay so Liam could fulfil his intention of taking some damn good photos of the harbour. We walked the circuit of the Opera House (and booked a show for Thursday, exciting!) taking pictures of absolutely EVERYTHING in our path, behaving strangely like the japanese tourists. We couldn't believe how nice the day was, so, with this in mind we thought it would be a good idea to do the climb today, just in case it turned sour for the rest of the week.
We booked in for the 2pm climb, and only had an hour to get excited. It all felt very spontaneous - Liam paid for it on his card as Claire had been (stupidly) intending on today to be a cheap day, and had only brought $15 with her, not even her card, oops. After having some lunch, we donned our sexy 'teletubby' suits, went through the safety procedures and introduced ourselves to the rest of the group. Well, the group was only 5 people including us - one guy was from Canada, now living in Thailand, and the other couple were from Chesterfield, sort of near Claire, having gone to uni in Nottingham! It's a small world! We chose to do the discovery climb, which meant climbing the lower section of the bridge, followed by a steep staircase in the middle to see the peak. The views were amazing, and our choice of walk was justified as we got to see the panorama at the end, as well as all the ins and outs of how the bridge was constructed and how it was maintained today. The Bridge is over 77 years old, and only 3 people died from falling off - which apparently was quite an achievement(?!). It took 3 and a half hours up and down, and we did get a cd of some photos to remember our day. Our guide was excellent, really clued up (apart from one myth about a golden rivet, which Liam knew but she didn't!) and took the safety issue seriously, but not too seriously. None of us were suicidal after all.
Not sure how we're going to top this really.... oh wait... SKYDIVING! :D
