So here we are in Sydney! Hurrah! Back to the glorious city living.... currently in the rain. Monday was our flight out here, which went without a hitch. We're still aware that signs around Australia are atrocious, and we consequently got lost a fair few times (not because we can't read of course...) but eventually we did touchdown, then decided not to take 2 buses in the pouring rain to our hostel. Instead, we were hoarded into a mini bus with a load of other backpackers - not as scary as it sounds promise - and were dropped off right outside the door for about a tenner Monday. Upon arrival the nice receptionist worried our socks off by saying the booking hadn't been made, despite Claire emailing backwards and forwards to a guy called 'Andrew' confirming the price and the dates a week before. Either way, they luckily had a room for us for a week, and we got the price down too for the inconvenience haha! After getting settled in with our bags, we were hungry for some grub, so from a recommendation, headed down Glebe Point Road and found a cute little Thai restaurant which was both cheap and nourishing after a hectic day :)
Our first full day in Sydney was devoted to sorting out our plan for the next couple of weeks, and we were determined to make the most of our time here by planning out what we'd do when and researching all the shizz we could do. We soon realised city living is more expensive than we'd anticipated, but regardless there were loads of things to keep us occupied! Our first port of call was to catch up on all the washing and things we had left pile up (oops) and sort out our budget, as well as buy a load of food to last us the week. Basically a sorting out day.
Our next port of call on Wednesday of course was Circular Quay to see the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. As you can see from the first batch of photos, the weather wasn't ideal today, with cloudy skies and at times throwing it down with rain, we soon decided that any outdoor activities would be futile, so, on a whim, we walked past an independent cinema and went to see the new Tom Hanks film, Angels & Demons. Film-wise, it lacked a lot of detail, meaning Liam didn't rate it as he hadn't read the book and the film missed out a lot of key development, whereas Claire liked it more than The Da Vinci Code, as it was more believeable, if you read the book and fully understood the ins and outs. When we got out of the cinema, it was still raining raining raining, and I'm not talking light showers - full blown STORM, so we ran to the bus stop and headed back to the hostel. Sydney has a very strange system for buses, almost like an oyster card at London - you can't pay for tickets on board. So, with this in mind we did eventually manage to get home (and annoy more than one bus driver in the process with our questions).
Fingers crossed the weather will improve this week :(
