Merry Christmas everyone, hope you had a good day!
Since we arrived last Wednesday we've been extremely busy, which is why we've not had time to update our journal!
After the flight from Singapore to Melbourne on Wednesday we arrived at our guesthouse which is about 10 mins from the centre of Melbourne. On Thursday we went to Melbourne Zoo which was fantastic and spent a couple of hours looking at the animals. It was such a hot day - almost 40 degrees so we decided to go to Brighton Beach (the first beach we could find) We spent just 2 hours there becuase it was so hot!!
On Friday we booked up for an organised tour to The Great Ocean Road which was fantastic although the weather was slightly disappointing! We left at 7am and didn't return to our guesthouse until 11pm so had a very full day of sightseeing.
On Saturdaywe went on another tour called Pengiun Parade. Frist stop was to a winery for lunch where we tasted a number of different wines. We then went to an animal park and saw Koalas, Emus, Kangaroos, Wallabies and Tasmanian Devils. We got to feed the Wallabies and Kangaroos which was a great experience. We then went to Port Philip Island to see pengiuns coming in off the beach in the evening, we all sat from about 8.30pm for about an hour and saw over 1,000 small penguins coming out of the sea to their burrows - its was absolutely fantastic to watch - if not a little cold.
On Christmas Eve we moved from our guesthouse in South Yarra to a hotel in the centre for Christmas. We spent the afternoon shopping, trying to find a little christmas present for eachother so we had something to open and then in the evening we met up with Polly, Andy and Tamsin which was lovely - it was so nice to meet up with people from home and we've had a fantastic christmas with them.
On Christmas Day we met with Polly & co and caught a tram to Port Melbourne to our restaurant for christmas dinner. THe venue was fanstatic, right on the harbour and the restaurant was really good too but the service was appalling and bought our deserts over even before we'd had our turcky. After waiting an hour and a half for our main course, our turkey arrived but was cold we we complained that the service and food was unaccaptable. The result was that we got all of our drinks free, which was about 4 bottles of wine, sparkling wine and beer (well we'd been sat in the restaurnat for 3.5 hours waiting for our food so what else did we have to do!!) We then spent the rest of the afternoon and evening visiting bars in Melbourne and had a fantastic day.
Today, Boxing Day, we went to St Kilda beach for lunch with Tamsin while the others went off to watch the cricket and we then spent the rest of the afternoon looking round the shops in the sales (absolute mahem)!!
We have to check out of our hotel tomorrow and as we can't find any other accommodation as the whole of Melbourne has been taken over by cricket fans, we're going to head up to Sydney early by overnight coach tomorrow. The weather is a lot better up there anyway and we're quite keen to get away from the wind and rain here!
We'll update our journal again once we've arrived in Sydney and got some news for you.
Lots of love
Claire & Andy xxx
