Hi
Well we hear you have snow in Eastbourne - lucky you! Mind you the weather here hasn't been that much better. Airlie Beach is in the middle of the rainy season and we really have experienced the full extent of it - apart from when we visited Whitehaven Beach, the main Whitsunday Beach, thank goodness!
The first day at Airlie Beach we spent the day looking around the town - not that theres much to see but its was nice to have a chilled day. We booked our trip at the last minute to sail around The Whitsunday Islands and decided on a 2 day. 2 night trip.
The next day we boarded our boat "Reality Is..." Once on the boat and 5 minutes into the trip the boat master Pat (the prat!) sat us all down and gave us a welcome talk, thats when we were told that it was a party boat - great!! Not quite the romantic sailing trip we'd imagined! So, the reality was that we basically had to either join in or jump off the boat and swim back to shore. Briliiant, two days and two nights of this!! The best was next to come, it started raining, so we all piled into the tiny cabin - all 30 of us and had no choice but to start drinking - at least that would relax us a bit more!!
We arrived at our accommodation on Hook Island. We had been told, we'd be sleeping on the boat but no, we were in a mixed dorm - that was quite an experience!!
The next day we sailed to Whithaven beach, which was amazing and very surreal to be standing on a picture postcard island. The rest of the trip was spent sailing around the islands, snorkelling and taking in the picturesque views - along with a bit more rain!
The downfall of the trip was the boatmaster who was a complete idiot but the trip itself and the places we went to were amazing!
The next day we took The Greyhound from Airlie Beach to where we are now - Hervey Bay. The coach trip was an overnight trip of 12 hours. 2 hours into the trip and after enduring torrential rain, the coach broke down - brilliant!! We sat on the roadside for a couple of hours while the mechanic was called out, resulting in the news that we would have to wait for another coach to be laid on. In the end our 12 hour trip turned into 16 hours.
We finally arrived at our hostel, which is lovely and we've booked a trip for tomorrow to Fraser Island.
We'll update you again soon - enjoy the snow.
Love Claire & Andy xxx
