Well after a short two hour flight from Recife in the RAIN! Perfect day to travel!! Chance for the sunburn to subside and im not missing the tanage time or travelling in ridiculous heat!! Couldnt have been happier!
Wasnt too impressed when we landed in rain in Salvador too though.. Thats not suppose to happen! Ha! But anyway we did and then had to wait around for the bus as always, got caught in a rainstorm and because we'd missed breakfast and not had lunch i was a bit peckish so i brought what i thought was lemon cake (i cant speak/read Portuguese so not much point trying to ask if it was), but nope. It was my nightmare.. it was BANANA cake! :-/ made me bearly vom.. Naturally had the biggest bite ever too!
So i wasnt off to the best of starts in Salvador!
We then got on the bus and it got worse! This bus is an airport transfer bus into town, so you'd think that they would have room for luggage!?? Oooohhhh no not in Brazil! Who would have luggage from an airport!! It was a nightmare! I think Toms and my bags were the biggest but STILL! So after annoying a lot of people to get a seat and take my bag with me to it we were finally off!
Two hours later we still werent where we needed to be! This bus journey was suppose to take 1 hour! There was tons of traffic, in both directions and people everywhere! It was manic! After another 5/10minutes though the bus just stopped and kicked everyone off! Told us to walk up this hill and we'd be where it was supposed to go! GREEEAAAATTT thanks! Ha!
There was a protest which is why the bus had stopped. Brilliant. Now if you read any guide book, speak to anyone (even locals) about Slavador they will tell you that if your going to get mugged its going to be Salvador! Top that with that if you read any guide book about travelling generally they say avoid protests like the plague, travellers get caught up and can be in trouble there..
So we were in Slavador, the one place you will be mugged AND in the middle of a protest.. Which by the way we had to walk through to get to the hostel! Loving life in Salvador so far!
So we start walking towards this protest and theres obviously police. So i ask this big guy and he was massive! With a load of medals and stuff all over his top whether its safe.. He speaks back in fluent Portuguese so i have zero idea what hes said so i just repeat it.. And then he starts to walk with us through this protest (obviously telling us it isnt safe to walk through!) it was brilliant! He then took my bag off me and started pulling it along up this hill so i didnt have to! Haha! Tom was there and these two other girls who had got off our bus one who's wheel had actually fell off all lugging theres up and im having a nice stroll! Haha! It then started raining really hard and we asked him (well i pointed really- got realllyy good at charades whilst ive been away!) whether we should just take a taxi, but he wouldnt let us get in! Kept on going..! He finally let us get in a taxi once we completely soaked through!
Salvador isnt actually that nice. In fact its a s*** hole. Well the bit where we were was anyway. We didnt go to any other areas because the hostel even said it wasnt that safe (fine in the day just at night) and it was raining for the whole time we were here to. We went through them on the bus though and looked and they didnt seem that special! So basically the historic bit (which is suppose to be touristy!) was a s*** hole!
We have decided (after looking at the weather forecast) that we arent going to stay in Slavador after all and are going to head straight to Paraty instead a little earlier than planned! And where its not raining..!!
Speak Soon! Muchos love.
