So the journey from Thailand into Malaysia was a bit funny. To save $10 (it may not seem like a lot, but when you are on a tight budget like us, that is almost half of our daily budget!) we decided to take the longer route, which only got us in 3 hours later then if we were to pay the ten dollars more. One of the differences was taking a ferry instead of a speed boat ...and the other difference, a private car instead of a minibus driven by a skinny old Thai man in his red velvet 1990 Buick something and taking us to the wrong ferry dock. So then another local, a younger kid this time with an old woman in the front seat gives us a lift to the right dock. Luckily I had accidentally taken the drowsy kind of gravol and was passed out for the majority of the trip so didn't have to see the erratic driving Cynthia witnessed. Once we finally get to the dock and it's time to embark, an instrumental version of Eric Clapton's "tears in heaven" blares loudly over the intercom followed by a short announcement to let everyone know that it's time to go. We are the only white people on the ferry and a movie called "shark night" dubbed over in Malay plays halfway then repeats three times until we get to Langkawi. I thought this whole journey may have been a hallucination, but Cynthia assures me it all really happened.
We arrive to a rainy day... It makes us a little nervous as some people in Thailand told us due to strange weather patterns( cough cough global warming) Malaysia and Indonesia have been experiencing monsoon weather. This custom stop was pretty slack, no paper work needed, no questions asked, just a stamp and the security lady had me unzip my small back pack took a visual peek and waved me through (darn we shouldn't have left all our drugs in Thailand....hee hee just kidding!). After we find a place with availability we decide our budget only allows for one night in this place, so we out head for a nice Indian dinner where we sample all the beers on the menu and head to bed. The next morning we find our budget motel.....The walls are an off white dirty color with god knows what splattered in random places, the bed is a thin cushion on top of a wooden box and the washroom.....oh my, probably the worst yet...there isn't even a sink. "Are those bullet holes?" But it's $5 a night and it's a stones throw away from the soft white sand beach. Luckily the weather has turned out to be amazing so we've spent most our time at the beach. Minus the whole day we spent laying in bed trying to get over the worst hangovers we have ever had caused by a fun night out with some locals, where we drank way too much! Me more than Karli, I'd say that was her night to be on watch....somewhat.
Today we took a cable car up to a pedestrian sky bridge that is suspended 700 meters above sea level. From the top we saw some incredible views of Langkawi and some of the 99 islands surrounding the area. Annnnnnnnd there goes a mouse across the floor! Awesome. We were unsuccessful at finding out where his escape route was, or if he even left the room... Ugh trying to sleep tonight should be fun! Anyways back to the blog. Tomorrow we are taking a risk on the weather and heading to the east coast to the Perhentian islands...our fingers are crossed that the weather will be good as its technically monsoon season there!
Much love,
C&K
