So the journey from Thailand into Malaysia was a bit funny. To save $10 (it may not seem like a lot, but when you are on a tight budget like us, that is almost half of our daily budget!) we decided to take the longer route, which only got us in 3 hours later then if we were to pay the ten  dollars more.
