Today John decided we should walk to Bačka Palanka in Serbia. This meant a 6km walk over the bridge & the Danube with our passports in hand as Serbia is not part of the EU.
We headed off at 9:30 am and checked out the Platz - local market & found lots of great fresh produce at ridiculously low prices. The locals here love the Croatians coming over as they spend well because there are 15 Dinar to the Kuna and for us 75 Dinar to the $. So when I found fresh cobs of sweet corn for 20 Dinar a piece it was important to buy up for Saturday night's BBQ at Darija & Dragan's place, a short walk up the hill.
We filled up our backpacks with goodies, stopped for a coffee & further down the road stopped for an ice-cream - a scoop of sour cherry & one of lemon - yum & most refreshing, just what was needed for the 'short' walk home to Ilok. We managed to get home in time for lunch, but, we were stuffed as the temperature today has risen to the low 30s.
At about 4pm we headed off to Vinkovci, the capital city of Slavonija, a Croatian state that incorporates Ilok & Vukovar. We were off to do some shopping with Dragan & Sandra. On our into Ilok a couple of weeks ago we had travelled through Vinkovci & Vukovar & today found out that a small town on our way was wiped out by the Serbs in the 1990s invasion of this territory.
Back home at about 8:30pm for a light dinner, a couple of drinks, a bit of TV and bed.
