Today was a quiet day, no lunch today as we were heading off to Bačka Palanka for Pljeskavice this afternoon with Dragan. We intended to walk over, but John couldn't wait and even though he was told by Dragan to stay put as it looked like rain was coming he cracked the sad's & walked off alone.
The local market (Platz) at Bačka Palanka was very low on produce by the time we arrived at about 4pm so all we purchased was a 10kg bag of extremely fresh paprika (sweet red capsicums) for Cvita to use to make Ajvar - a yummy paste that is eaten with bread, cold meats & grilled food.
We met John and joined him, had a beer & ordered our Pljeskavice that came with small Turkish breads & our own choice of sides. We of course ordered the chilli version of these grilled patties, whereas Dragan preferred the bland one. A few beers later and a full tummy we purchased various supplies from the local supermarket & grog shop. Everything is cheaper here as the value of the Dinar is very low compared with other currencies & the taxes on goods are also much lower, so many of the locals from Ilok travel across the Danube to buy up & save money.
By the way the locals all have an identity card that they show at the border crossing to simplify things & reduce the time it takes for them to cross. We have to show our passports which are then scanned, stamped & returned by the Croatian Border Police just before we get to the bridge over the Danube and again by the Serbian Border Police when we reach the other side of the bridge. The same happens when you return from Serbia. We believe it's about 1km between the two checkpoints - that means the river is about 750m wide between the 2 countries.
Back home in time for a chat & and few drinks before resting for the night.
