Hey everyone!,
The last week or so has been all about experiencing Cambodia's culture. After arriving from a 'fun' 35 hour bus jouney I arrived in Siem Reap. Siem Reap is a small city with its main attraction beeing Angor Wot and the main nightlife along one main strip called 'Pub Street'.
After meeting Dan, 27, and Debbie, 32, both single travellers, on the bus on the way down we decided to stayin the same hostel. After the bus jorney all we wanted to do was sleep, so we ended up going out untill 5.30 in the morning, as you do. The next day therefore was a right off, and we just used it as a chance to get our bearings of the city and plan the next few days ahead of us.
On day 2 we went to see Angor Wot. This is an amazing religious building, and is enormous!! The centre tour measures 55m and there are hundreds of other incredible buildings surround Angor Wot. We spent the day wondering around these amazing buildings with a tuktuk driver who we rented for the day. Angor Wot is one of the most impressive things ive seen and if in Cambodia a must see!
On Day 3, we fullfilled the rumours that we had been hearing about most of the trip so far. We took a tuktuk about 45mins outside of Seim Reap and entered what didnt look anything like a shooting range. In Cambodia, anything goes, and me and Dan both fired M16's which was the really fuin, but also very intense at the sheer power and sound of the gun! The range had a whole selection of weapons displayed on the wall as you entered. These had clearly been used with the influence of US forces 40 years ago. After a fun day we met up with Luke and Steve, both 23 from Wotford, and went out with them in the evening. After this i took the bus down the Phnem Penh.
After a short 6 hour bus journey I arrived in Phnom Penh and grouped up with another set of English guys from Whitney! We spent the next 2 days visiting the after math of Pol Pots influence over the long 4 year he had in power between 1971-75. We visited S21, the prior school turn tourture builings, where educated people would be taken and tortured for 4-5 months before beeing sent to the killing fields to be executed. The killing fields was more intense than S21 and we saw only 10% of the graves that had been uncovered. An estimated 17000 people had been executed here. Although the most famous this was one of aound 180 other killing field in Cambodia.
After 2 very interesting days i headed back Bangkok and I am now currently in Koh pangan, just come off the beach, for the Full Moon Party on March 1st. There has also been a slight change of plan to my Itinery. Instead of spending a month on the islands i know plan to go to Bali for 17 days surfing and then onto Australia.
Will Keep you updated in a week or so, and apologies for lack of photo's it just takes forever to upload them out here.
