Bangkok is a hot stuffy city at the best of times so the first thing to do when we arrived at the hostel was to have a shower and change into shorts... quickly. Incidently, We stayed at what I imagine to be the best hostel in Bangkok and maybe the whole of Thailand. Situated in Soi 1 and run by a cool American, named Dave, who hasn't really grown out of his 20's (but is 48 i believe) it is close to any club or bar you may wish to go to and a short tuk tuk drive away from koh san road. This is where 20 men including freddy played tug of war against an elephant and lost, of cvourse I knew this was going to happen so I avoided humilation by standing at the sidelines and eating some definately safe noodles off the street.
Other than wander around during the day we didn't do much, our main priority was carefully investigating the city at night and perhaps strolling into a bar for a tipple. This results in coming home later, sometimes with a tattoo, having to avoid the men dressed as women before arriving back within the saftey of Dave's hostel. Needless to say with my perfect judgement was always aware of when a Lady-Boy trying to make eye contact so I was very good at this game.
The other thing to do for fun in Bangkok is ride around in the tuk tuks. ALWAYS offer at least half the price they try to give you. Mainly starting at 20% what they state. The driver will then proceed to offer you a free ride "if only you wuoldn't mind stopping off just once to look at suits, you'll get a free beer". An initial response of course is "No thank you sir I already have apporpriate attire catered to my needs". Towards the end of our time in Bangkok we resorted to telling them that if they stopped they would not recieve the full payment and perhaps aquire an enemy within the city. Saying this, we did get one free ride because we were looking for a music store and after being driven around for about an hour the driver told us he owned a guitar for sale (what we were looking for). It's not the best guitar in the world but it only cost about 14 Pounds. Good buy, but on the way back his tuk tuk broke down and we had to walk.... a genuine break down because he was still there when we realised we had gone the wrong way and came back past him.
