7.30am start gorgeous sunny day, we had breakfast at the hotel & jumped in a taxi to the Cu Chi tunnels about an hour & a half from Ho Chi Minh. The Cu Chi tunnel network spans 250km and connected 6 villages in the 1960's, the underground tunnels facilitated Viet Cong control of a large rural area during the war. We got in the tunnels and walked underground bent in half, it was very claustrophobic. Certainly makes you appreciate how difficult it must have been for the Vietnamese to live underground for weeks at a time. We saw the various traps that were used against the American soldiers, the tour was in rather anti-American! Towards the end of the tour we were given the option to shoot some guns, we chose the AK-47 and shot a few rounds, the guns were so loud and powerful. At the end of the tour we had green tea and tapioca dipped in crushed peanuts mmmmm!
We arrived back in Ho Chi Minh around 2pm, first stop was the War Remnants Museum followed by the Reunification Palace, followed by the Notre Dame Cathedral. We were trying to see as much as possible in one day so the next stop was the Bitexco financial tower sky deck on the 48th floor, it was such a gorgeous day we were able to see panoramic views of Ho Chi Minh. The last stop of the day was the huge Ben Thanh market, on the way back to the hotel we stopped for a well deserved iced coffee. We collected our backpacks from our hotel to catch the 8pm night bus to Nha Trang!
