The full name of the town is Tiruchirappalli but it is commonly known as Trichy, its name literally means 'city of sacred rock'. The name comes from its famous rock fort, there is a Ganesh Temple situated at the top of the 434 steps, giving you a 360 degree view of the whole city. A reward for completing the uphill journey to the top. It is amazing to see the dedication people go through in for the reach the temple, there are many elderly and many very young children to been seen making their way up the several flights of stairs.
The other landmark here is the Sri Ranganathaswamy temple complex, not unlike the one we just visited in Madurai. This temple complex is the largest in India covering 2 and half square kilometres. These seem strange to me, instead of having a temple to worship in, it feels like they have almost made a little Hindu town and sanctuary inside the city complete with temple inside. There are numerous towers filled with impressive statues of the Gods and then rooms throughout the area, and pillars with impressive carvings. There is then a 'main' temple area that foreigners or non hindus are not allowed to enter. It would appear that many people come into the temple to spend their day there. The rooms are filled with people sleeping on the ground or groups of friends sitting about chatting, it really feels as if you have walked into an enclosed community.
