First impressions of the second largest town and ancient capital of Tamil Nadu; are not great. As we drive through, the place seems dirty and basic, it has more of a resemblance to the cities in the north like Delhi and Varanasi.
In the afternoon after our arrived we went on a guided tour of the Shree Meenaksh Temple, the main attraction of this old town. It is the biggest temple I have seen so far in India, with an impressive array of several towers varying in size the largest being 52 meters high. As we weaved in and out of the many buildings throughout the temple, we saw the Golden Lotus Pond and the Thousand Pillar room, however there are now only 995 left standing.
In the evening we were given the full show of the Indian monsoon, torrential rain combined with an impressive display of thunder and lightening. Of course this was also joined with the call from the Mosque. It is going to be a noisy evening!
