10/12/10 - 11/12/10
As the road trip was supposed to start today we were really excited but we couldn't get a car for the journey. So we had to stay in Brisbane for another two days. It turned out to be good as we got to chill out and hang out with our friends. We spent these days either watching movies or at the lagoon depending on the weather. We did get caught out in a down pour whilst out one day and i've never seen so much rain fall in such a short period of time. We did get soaked :(

Today we travelled to Surfers Paradise which is kind of like australias equivilent of Benidorm with all the high rise hotels and apartments. We took a walk round town and looked at all the various surf shops and gift shops. We even stopped in at a pet shop that had the cutest puppies in the window and you could take them home over night to take care of them. We really wanted to do that but unfortunately we couldn't. After that we sat on the beach for a while with a smoothie enjoying the weather and the views. That night we relaxed in the hostel chatting and our friend Ben made us all a mean spag bol so we had a feast with our little group.

Today we travelled down the coast to Byron Bay. Once we arrived in Byron Bay and got checked into the hostel, we only had time to get some dinner and head out for a couple of drinks with our friends.

Today it was a rainy day so we spent the day doing all the domestic duties like washing clothes and relaxing around the hostel playing pool, cards and watching t.v.
15/12/10
Today the sun came out so we went straight to the beach to catch some sun and work on my none existant tan. The sun was so hot it was amazing, however I must have missed a bit of my body with the sun cream because it got so burnt, and I felt like such a fool. After the beach we had some dinner and went out to a club called Cheeky Monkey's, which only plays cheesy music and everybody dances on the tables. It was a great night and we had lots of fun.

Today we tried to get down the beach but a thunder storm set in early in the morning. It had passed by lunch time so we managed to get out and enjoy some of the sun. After this we walked up to the light house and the most easternly point in Australia. It was a nice walk up along the coast to this spot and the views once we got there were spectacular. After this long walk we spent the night relaxing in the hostel chatting with out friends as we were leaving in the morning for the surf camp.

Today we travelled to Woolgoolga (Spot X) for a surf camp. We were not surfing today so we spent the afternoon exploring the camp and walking along the beach. It was a lovely beach and the sunset was amazing. We had an early night in anticpation of the surfing in the morning.

Today we started our surf lessons and the instructors were really funny and they were very stereotypical surf dudes. The long blonde straggly hair, very ripped, and tanned. After the intial safety lessons in which one of the rules was you must look cool at all times, we headed off down to the beach with our wetsuits on and surf boards under our arms. Once in the water and the instructors had told us everything we need to know we were on our own to get up and ride a wave. After the first couple of attempts and some exciting wipeouts, Kirsty and I were managing to get up and ride the waves into the beach. It was such a good feeling to ride a wave all the way into the beach. So after our first two hour lesson we were amazed with our progress. We spent the rest of the day chilling out and enjoying the sun. I did decide to go for a run which turned out to be a very bad idea as I pulled my calf muscle whilst out running. That night some of our friends from Byron Bay travelled down to join us so we had a great night with them laughing and telling more stories around the fireplace.
19/12/10
This was our second surf lesson and the weather was not great as it was raining quite heavy. However we were in the water so we really couldn't get any wetter. The instructors gave us a lot more freedom to try and explore our surfing ability, although they were still around to help us out if we were struggling at certain points. Kirsty and I had great fun although the wave conditions were not the best because the sea was pretty flat all morning. We would wait five or ten minutes for a big wave and then have to wait the same time again for the next big wave. On the whole we had a great time learning to surf and the photographer got some great shots of us "hanging ten" and "ripping it" on the waves. As it today was the staff at the camp's Christmas party we were invited to join in with their fun and games, which we duly did. We had lots of fun playing silly Christmas games with the staff and even watched them whilst they had their surf competition.

As we were leaving Spot X today we decided to get some last minute surfing in. As we were going surfing on our own we were very excited. Unfortunately the surfing conditions were not that great and there wasn't many big waves to be had. We did managed to catch one or two waves which was great and we got some photo's of us on the surf boards with our santa hats on. After this it was time to board the bus again and travel down to Coffs Harbour. Once we arrived and had some dinner we met some other people from the hostel and after a bit of chat we all decided to go down to the beach and have a wee fire. Whilst sitting round the fire we relaxed and exchanged stories of our travels.

As the sun was shining Kirsty and I decided to spend some time on the beach in the morning. After catching some rays we took a walk up to the massive shopping centre in the town. I was surprised to see when we entered the shopping centre that the whole centre was NOT decorated from top to bottom in Christmas decorations. They dont really seem to celebrate Christmas over here but thats to be expected as its summer time and its roasting here. After this we took a walk to the Big Banana in Coffs Harbour. Australia has many different big things and this is one of them. It is a childrens play area but it was cool to see such a big structure.
22/12/10
Today we boarded the bus again for the nine hour trip down to Sydney where we will be spending Christmas and New Year.
