As Chris left to live on the farm like Crocodile Dundee and play around with all the dangerous snakes and spiders, I continued on with the travel plan. I left Sydney and caught the Greyhound bus down to Canberrra. This is the capital city so I was excited and also a bit nervous as this is the first time I would be travelling on my own. I arrived at the hostel and it was very big with lots of people so it was easy for me to meet new people and make friends which calmed my nerves. That night a small group of us went out and had some ozzie style steak (cooked on the bbq!) and played some pool and got to know each other.
I spent a few days in Canberra and in that time I visited the AIS (the Australian Institute of Sport). This is where the elite australian athletes live and train for sports such as swimming, basketball, athletics, volleyball etc. The facilities were very impressive but as it was the holidays there was very few athletes about as they had all gone home to spend xmas and new year with their families. I got to learn about the history of sport in Australia and there was lots of information about the Olympics in 2000 that were held in Sydney - Australia is very proud of this event and also of the athlete 'Cathy Freeman' who was the first aboriginal woman to win a medal in the Olympics.
I vistied Questacon - This is an interactive science musuem and it was full of very small children so didnt spend too long in there as I felt a bit out of place with all the ankle biters around! I headed to the parliament buildings on Capital Hill which were very beautiful.
I vistied the war memorial which is very famous in Canberra. It shows the history of the many wars in which Australia has been involved. There are many poppies left for the soldiers who died in ww1 and ww2. This was a very moving sight and it was very interesting to read all the names and the stories of soldiers.
