Day twenty-five and it was going to be jammed packed. Two cities to be seen in one day, so it was another early start.
First half was Luzern. Grabbed the city guide from the hotel and just followed the suggested walking route to see the main sights. It provided us with a fantastic map and it worked very well.
Luzern is a cute city. It's very relaxed and easy going. No major rush and the intentions seems to be to just enjoy life. People are laid back and very social. They call it the city for pedestrians. It's easy to walk around and a lot of people ride bicycles as well.
On one side of the river it's the old town and the other side is the more modern section. That said, most of our walk was in the old town.
It started with a walk across the chapel bridge which was constructed in the 14th century as part of the cities fortifications. We were guided to walk through many of the city squares that have cute little fountains. Walking through the old town there are beautiful old Swiss buildings which have paintings on the outside of them. It makes the walk just that little more interesting. After doing the little streets we walked up the back of the city where the Rampart Wall is and climbed up two of the towers to take in the view over Luzern.
Next on the red dotted line was the lion monument. Hewn out of natural rock "The dying Lion of Lucerne" is a famous monument and is in memory of the heroic death of the Swiss mercenaries at the Tuileries in 1792. It's quite sad and we found it unexpectedly moving.
Onward and we grabbed some food from the trusty Co-op Supermarket and walked around to the Hof Church. From here we headed around the waterfront where everybody was relaxing in the sun eating lunch. So nice to see that mentality!
Before heading back to the station we walked up to see the Needle Dam Facility. It was interesting to see the methods used for the cities flood protection. Maybe Australia should take a look and see how it's done.
Next was a fifty minute train ride and we arrived in Zurich. We went straight to the "Easyhotel", that felt like a Jetstar branded hotel. We dumped our bags, picked up a guide from the hotel and headed straight back out.
Again following a similar system as Lucerne, we followed a suggested track around the city. It took us through the back streets and past a few little boutique shops. Along the Limmat River to the Lindenhof and we watched retired men play giant chess and kids in the playground.
Next was St Peter-Kirche. A church with Europe's largest clock face. It was pretty big. Linden, you could even read it without your glasses!
Continuing on we walked our way through the working capital of Switzerland, the money, the control, the big wigs of Switzerland - the banks. Ryan was in heaven looking at all the Ferrari's and Porsche's parked and driving around.
After that we headed towards Polyerrasse, which is small red cable car that takes you up to a viewing point. Took that up and down and then decided to stop for food and beer.
After eating dinner we strolled along the waterside where it seemed everybody in Zurich was bathing in the glorious weather. Whilst walking along the right side of Lake Zurich the general consensus was made up of people sitting around and drinking beer, socializing, throwing frisbees and having picnics until the sun went down. It was an amazing atmosphere and I was jealous! I've never seen so many people out and about enjoying life - Geelong should take note!
Grabbed an ice-cream and headed home to pack our stuff once again to head to Munich at 9 the next morning.
