Day twenty-six and it was time to move on to Germany. With three countries under the belt, we had three to go and despite the expense of Switzerland and our wallets being lighter we were sad to leave.
We boarded the 9.13am train and arrived in Munich around lunch time. Then headed straight to the hotel to dump our bags which was only a 5 minute walk.
Great hotel except for the lack of wifi, which made it hard to do research, check bank accounts and emails. They have three computers in the lobby but it's hard to get on them as everybody else has the same intention.
We headed back to the station to check out the tourist information and buy a Munich pass which allowed us to use the public transport for 3 days and get discounts for lots of different sights.
We then headed out to the BMW Museum and the Olympic Park.
The BMW Museum was rather large and a very modern museum. The first section we went to was the art cars, which is only a temporary exhibit.
Particular artists from around the world, including Ken Done, were selected to design and paint BMWs from their era. All of them were pretty good and it was something a bit different from the norm.
The rest of the museum was also great. The overall display was fantastic. Very creative and bright. They mounted Formula 1 cars, put a range of motorbikes on a wall and other things such as hanging all the model numbers in a distinctive way which explained how and why each car was / is called what it is. It made it that little bit more interesting.
They also had the exact cars that 007 drove in "Die Another Day" and "Goldfinger" the Z3 and Z8. Of course that meant that everybody was posing in front of them with the gun pose. How original. I didn't do that by the way.
The other section is the BMW Welt. In this building you could do a tour of the factory or you could just walk around the new car displays and play around with a number of different interactive toys. We wanted to do the tour but missed out because it was booked out. Next time.
After spending around two hours at the BMW centre we walked across to Olympiapark where the Olympic Stadium, Olympic Hall and Olympic Swimming Pool is. This is where the 1972 20th Olympic Summer Games were held. There is also a memorial site for the victims killed in the terrorist attacks that occurred in the last week of the Olympics.
For those who don't know members of the Palestinian terrorist group ‘Black September’ killed two Israeli athletes and took nine others hostage at the Olympic Village, demanding the release of political prisoners and an escape aircraft. During a failed rescue attempt by German security forces at Fürstenfeldbruck, a military base west of Munich, all the hostages and most of the terrorists were killed.
Following the Olympics the Olympiastadion is used for numerous football matches and concerts.
The design of the stadium is extremely modern considering when is was built. Back then it was considered a revolutionary design. The roof has held up to now with no major repairs, however the time has come to do some substantial restorations.
Moving on we walked back to the U Bahn (metro) and headed towards the English Garden. This garden is huge. We didn't have enough time to stroll the whole thing so we just did half. The main thing that we wanted to see was the surfable wave.
This is now one of the main attractions of the park and is an artificially created wave in the Eisbach. The Eisbach runs through the English garden and its definitely a raging torrent. The water flows under a bridge and hits a slab of concrete at the right angle to create a wave. It’s only a single non-rolling wave, but it’s a damn fine one for exercising on. You need to see the video footage that we took to understand.
After watching the surfing for ages we headed on to dinner. We discovered a cute little restaurant tucked away and had a great meat and veg, hearty meal which we both needed.
To finish the night off we went to the Hofbräuhaus. No visit to Munich would be complete without a stop at the Hofbräuhaus, Bavaria’s most celebrated beer hall. Along with every other tourist we both drank 1L of beer, and by the end it was a bit flat and made me a little tipsy!
After a big day it was time to get back on the U Bahn and go back to the hotel to have a good nights sleep.
