Day twenty-seven and the breakfast on offer at the hotel was the largest selection yet. We both helped ourselves to enormous servings of eggs, bacon, yoghurt and pastry goods. Sallie also wrapped up a few items for later in the day.
We had registered ourselves the previous day to take a guided tour to the Dachau Concentration Camp.
With ominous clouds beginning to form, we met up with our guide, an American man with a fascination for peaked hats.
He was an excellent presenter and despite the subdued nature of the trip he managed to lift the mood of the group a few times with some muddled humor. I personally prefer guides who sound like they haven't perfectly rehearsed every line. In this case he came across very naturally and his level of knowledge for dates and events, without the aid of notes, was superb. I know this as I tried my best to ask difficult questions.
As for Dachau, it is an extremely humbling place. The atmosphere at the other camps, where even worse atrocities were carried out, must be totally heart-wrenching.
The buildings themselves don't appear to be all that malicious. Our guide explained that this was all part of the disguise of the camps. For me it was once I was inside and caught up in the imagery of the devastating effect the place had on so many people that it all began to take a completely different look.
Although it isn't the easiest place to absorb it is definitely something I would recommend. The hardest thing to grasp is just how recently all this occurred - and it certainly puts a lot of things in perspective.
The rain began to fall pretty heavily halfway through the tour but we didn't really notice until we were saturated at the station waiting for the train.
We enjoyed a hot chocolate from Starbucks and made our way back to the hotel to change for the evening.
As the rain had set in we altered our plans and visited an old toy collection in Marienplatz called Spielzeug-museum.
It is a small collection but has some fantastic items. Including toys made from paper through to 'Cowboys and Indians' and the original range of Barbies.
Feeling the need to lift our energy levels we enjoyed some pasta for dinner from a little Italian restaurant.
Determined to continue the previous nights festivities we enjoyed a beer at the Virtualienmarkt before heading back to the hotel and calling it a night.
