Saturday;; Day 19. 8am. I run out the house with barely a second to spare and start walking as fast as I possibly can, in sandals to get to North Parade where the bus will be picking everyone up for the tour. My walk soon turns into sandals in my hand and a very elegant gallop (haha, not!) to get there in time. When I get there, people are loading onto the bus and after talking to the driver, it seems 2 people are not rocking up (YES!)...he says 'this looks good for you'...I quickly cross the road to draw money out to pay him for the tour when I notice a couple approaching the bus. I look in despair and cancel my transaction to make my way back to the bus driver. It's the missing 2 and on the bus they go. Damn it! If only I'd called 5 minutes earlier when I was booking, but hey, these things happen for a reason..right?!! (ergh!)
The bus driver tells me there'll be another bus at 9am and to see if there are any seats on there...9am, no bus so I call the lady I had booked with and she tells me to go to the info office and see if I can book a trip with 'Scarper' tours and just do Stonehenge despite missing out on the other places. I head over, doesn't open til 9.30! Okay haha it's gonna be one of those days hey! No problem! Time to go with the flow and just see what happens...
I head to find somewhere cute for breakfast and cheer me up a bit! I find a place that Costa coffee recommends to me, it's called Bills. Bills it is. I look at the menu and go inside, it's my kinda place. I order salmon on poached eggs with avacado, hollandaise sauce, pumpkin seeds and sourdough bread. Yum. I sit in there by myself, quiet and wondering why I care so much that I missed the tour. I wonder if these things happen for a reason or simply just because I didn't call in time! Probably both haha! I start reflecting. I'm tired. I hardly slept last night. I find myself writing a poem. It's the only way I seem to be able to express myself and the depths that sometimes curse me as I can hardly sing to express myself and I have no face to paint. (makeup)...
I finish breakie and head back to the info office where things start to look up as she tells me there's only a couple of seats left for the 2pm tour. Well, there's only 1 of me so I think we'll take that before someone else books them all lol! A Stonehenge tour, back for 6pm. Done deal.
Until then, I find myself wondering the streets past buskers and fountains of people. I make my way over to the Holburn Museum where I have been wanting to visit and spend a few hours enjoying the art and history it presents along with a very attractive man that conveniently appears in the museum too. If he is a part of the art as well does that mean I can stare? He has a girlfriend but I can't help but raise my eyebrows and stare in disbelief to his exceptional beauty. Sorry, yes, the artwork. Look up. Oh yes, look, nice art that....where's he gone...oh the next room, I'm finished in this room anyway....eeeep hahaha stalker alert. He seriously was delicious...anyway.
The sun is out again, despite that silly weather forecast, and I simply walk the streets people-watching, taking photos and just simply being present. I'm in Bath! Woop! My spirit seems a whole lot higher since that refreshingly gorgeous man appeared! I walk through some markets, get something to eat and find myself back outside the Roman Baths where a man is sitting playing spanish guitar. He's busking but it's so unbelievably magical and I can feel it through every bend and turn of the town. It captivates me, especially as I will be in Spain in a matter of days. I sit down on a bench, amongst many others and just sit, listening to him with my eyes closed. For half an hour or so. I like today a bit more now.
I have 25 mins until my bus arrives. I find a little roundabout that's grassed and more like a mini circular park where everyone is eating their lunch in the sun. I join them, sit down, and find myself writing another poem. I put that one of Facebook. I hope you enjoyed it if you read it...
Stonehenge time. On the bus I get. Three American guys immediately catch my attention sitting on the back seat. 2 in their forties and a guy about my age in between them. They intrigue me but I don't really know how or why. Nevertheless I sit down, only a seat in front of them and keep to myself. I end up passed out most of the way thanks to being absolutely exhausted from no sleep but I wake myself up a few times when my head falls and bangs the glass window. Good one Chloe!
We arrive in Salisbury, the town that homes Stonehenge. We start at the visitor centre, are given audio guides and jump on a cute little train-bus that heads 10 minutes up a gravel road to the location of the stones. I'm excited. There's people everywhere from every corner of the globe. Some give away their motherland pretty easily in their World Cup tops, mainly Brasil and Costa Rica.
...The stones. There they are! I'm here hehe! They're massive, and the clouds have gone a deep grey with light blue stripes providing a picturesque scenery for a couple of awesome photos. (but not a drop of rain!) There's a rope as a boundary around the whole perimeter of the stones as we are not allowed up close, but I end up getting a photo of the stones at every angle possible! There's so many people here omg! The Americans offer to take a photo of me in front of the stones, and they seem to keep reappearing near me as we walk around amongst the crowds. I get a feeling they work in movies somehow...anyway.
I spend nearly an hour absorbing this significant historic masterpiece and listen to my audio device providing me with all the facts...
Back at the visitor centre there's a small exhibition and some more info for everyone to enjoy.
Time to go back to the bus. The Americans are not far behind. A South Korean guy, also from our bus, is apparently traveling around the world, much like I am and he decides to talk to me randomly just before we get on the bus, and asks me where else he should visit while in England. He's been traveling 9 months already and I show him where Lake District is on his IPad...
Back on the bus, everyone is seated in the same spots as before, I finish talking to the Korean traveler and then contemplate going back to sleep...But, the Americans (they look Greek by the way which I later find out they are originally from there). They have been so friendly but not once said more than a few words. I Have to talk to them though. No reason in particular, I just have to! ..I turn around to the guy directly behind me...'So are you guys traveling' is what comes out. And why yes of course, they are. They've been here only a couple of days but their about to fly to Malta and then to Spain to work on...wait for it...a movie! Haha love it! The one directly behind me is an Artist (and an absolutely mind-blowingly good one at that as I soon discover) as well as the set artist director for this movie. The other middle-aged guy is his brother and he is the producer of the movie. He's made other movies also and is apparently amazing. The younger guy is their nephew and is their personal assistant. They will be filming for 4 months. I'm absolutely fascinated. The conversation doesn't stop now until we arrive back in Bath. I ask about the movie and get to see some of the Artists work on his camera. They ask what I do and if I'm traveling. I let them know how I'm a Makeup Artist from Australia and that I'm backpacking but about to embark on a nannying experience for a family in Spain. They are impressed. They ask for my business card and like the photo they see on their of my work. They give me their email address and they get my personal one too. The producer says he's going to pass my details onto his makeup people and will contact me if an opportunity comes up to go to the set of this movie. The Artist encourages me to start doing more body painting and art again and encourages me to follow my dreams...I'm smiling. A lot. Like wow! These people are incredible and so talented. They are the kind of people you want to know for any kind of opportunity. And look; their in the same industry as me pretty much. You never know what's going to happen or what doors may open. Life has a funny way of doing things. Even if I never hear from them again though, I thoroughly enjoyed hearing their stories and I am so glad I turned around to talk to them. What a turn around of a day.
Solo Travelers Tip No. 4: If things just aren't going your way and despite your best efforts, nothing seems to be working out, just stop, and realise maybe it's for a reason. Instead, go with the wind and the direction it wants to take you, go with the flow and see what unfolds; you never know where it's going to take you and sometimes, you may be pleasantly surprised :)
Off the bus, I kiss them goodbye and say how lovely it was to meet them. I begin my walk home, satisfied and grateful for the experience. Maybe that's why I couldn't get on that other tour, despite how hard I tried. And maybe that's why I was on this tour instead...well, maybe not as well but who knows! Back at home I tell everyone about my day and we enjoy our last night together in Bath as tomorrow morning we will be heading to Knightsbridge in London to stay in their other house. I will be leaving in 2 days.
