We were very sad to leave Fiji but onwards we flew via Christmas Island and across the date line (so we got to re-live the same day) to Hawaii. Waikiki couldn't have been a starker contrast with bustling streets, high rises and shops a plenty, it was quite a shock but a pleasant one! Time to hit the beaches again but instead of deserted, calm sea's like in Fiji the shores were packed and the waves phenomenal, so good in fact we were treated to a surfing competition which was mega cool especially as the initial comp was for tandem surfers-where a couple produce impossible looking gymnastic lifting manoeuvres whilst riding a wave! Next day we decided to roll ourselves out of bed ridiculously early to do the diamond head crater walk before the sun was burning hot, we had been told by our guy friends that this was a quite easy 15 minute stroll when infact it turned into a steep uphill 45 minute hike on uneven terrain in the blistering heat (ok maybe slightly exaggerating but wasn't easy!!) we took the hostel's free trip to the north shore famous for it's amazing beaches and arguably the best surfing in the world-we stopped off at the renowned 'pipeline' beach where all the top surfing brands such as Quiksilver, Billabong etc own the beachfront houses. Our tour guide Andy was wicked and had a great sense of humour (unusual for an American!) we spotted our first Hawaiian turtles sunbathing and snorkelled along with one for a while which was wonderful. We decided to take the short flight across from Oahu to Maui which houses the stunning hotels and beaches where the celebs holiday-unfortunately we were staying in a hostel in the middle of the island in the 'Dodgy Area' which basically meant we couldn't leave the hostel after dark, always great to have that sense of security…!!! The hostel is known for it's free day trips but as we arrived late morning we had already missed that days so consulting the staff they recommended getting the 'airport shuttle' to drop us off at the nearest beach and HITCHIKING home, were these dudes for real!! There were 2 Aussie guys Alex & Luke who also decided to go to the beach with us & we all agreed to get a taxi home instead, unfortunately when we arrived it soon became apparent that any chance of getting a cab, food or water was out of the question! Once dehydration hit we all started the trek along the dusty road with our thumbs out, fortunately it wasn't long before someone took pity on us and picked us up, luckily we are still here to tell the tale! We did a few of the tours and got to swim with more turtles, visit a nudist beach, rain bathe, experience litre jugs of happy hour mai tai cocktails but best of all ride the humongous waves. I took it upon myself to borrow Luke's bodyboard with an inkling it would end in disaster which sure enough it did-I caught the wave, was riding high and then suddenly it broke swirled me around underwater and threw me onto shore, bikini off, sand in my hair looking like a beached whale-was so much fun couldn't stop laughing till I realised how bad I had sand burn on my nipple, owwwwwww. We flew back to Honolulu to enjoy a night out on the town in the gay bars-we had the best night and met a wicked couple from Chicago, Nick and John who hopefully will be coming to London soon. Visiting the Pearl Harbour memorial was very interesting and going to a real American pool party at the Sheraton Hotel was Uber cool especially as the designer Ed Hardy was there! Our final day in Hawaii was spent at the water park; interestingly we were the only white people on the bus amongst seas of Japanese.
