We have finally reached Hangzhou and started our placement on Monday. It's a much bigger town than we expected and comes with the usual high rises. Our apartment is about 20 minutes from the hospital by bus. The hospital seems friendly and more people are able to speak English than we thought, although some are keener than others!
So thats now..but we haven't updated for a long time so following on from the last time we wrote is Xi'an!
After arriving early in the morning we spent the first day looking around the city and visited the Big Goose Pagoda. We spent the evening in the Muslim quarter. Nishal tasted a local sweet delicacy and we found dried kiwi. The highlight was seeing a man escape from the police station followed by officers and well meaning, overweight members of the public! The following day we visited the Terracotta Army. These are life sized statues dating from 210BC made by the first emperor of China Qin Shi Huang to protect his tomb. The army includes chariots, horses, archers and generals. Each warriorrs face is different to represent thr real life army of the emperor. When we arrived we were amazed to see the amount of development that had gone on around the site. There was a KFC, various other food and coffee shops and the usual souvenir stalls. Nishal posed (again!) inside the armor of a terracotta warrior. There was a very large visitor cantre and exhibition and each of the pits was within another building. The warriors were very impressive and it was interesting to see the archeologists still at work.
