From Xi'an we moved on to Chengdu by sleeper train. We had soft sleeper this time which was much better and we shared the compartment with 2 Chinese business men who fed us biscuits! We talked to each other via the phrasebook and it was quite funny. We spent the first day exploring the city. We found a traditional tea house with nice jasmine tea and Nishal had his ears cleaned out Chinese style!
The second day we were up early to see the pandas! It was worth it as we beat the crowds and saw the teenage pandas eating their bamboo for breakfast. The panda sanctuary was in a very natural setting and it was nice to walk around. The lazy pandas go to sleep soon after breakfast so we were lucky to see a few of them still active in the early morning. There were also red pandas (cousins of the giant black dudes), that looked more like racoons.
That afternoon we had a difficult journey to the Leshan Buddha- the tallest one in the world at 71m tall! We took a river boat view of the sculpture and it was quite impressive. There were a few Chinese pilgrims on the boat and they started singing hymns and in the end we got an apple!
