Shanghai, the city of skyscrapers (it has 3000 of them - more than NYC). We spent the morning of our very early arrival looking at the shopping malls which were extortionately expensive but very posh. We found an M&S and a Clarks. Generally Shanghai seemed to cater well for its large numbers of ex-pats and English was quite widely spoken, which was a nice change from the rest of China. We wandered through the shopping districts, with the main street lit up with billboards and fancy lights (there was a giant thermometer showing the temperature to be a cool 35C at 530pm)! We visited the Bund in the evening, but as we had been warned there was a lot of construction going on in preparation for the 2010 Expo and it was not possible to walk along the river and take photos. It still looked impressive!
The following day we planned our big night out in Shanghai. We couldn't get to the world's highest bar due to all of the construction work but we had a very nice Thai meal in the French concession before finding that the only club we had the name of was closed also due to the construction! Damn the expo! We try again in Hong Kong!
From shanghai we got a fast train (2hrs) to Hangzhou. We'll keep going (slowly) with the photos.
