The Cornwall Crusade Day 1
An adventure of epic proportions was about to begin with the search for King Arthur's castle. On this crusade, I will have to tame the mischievous pixies of Dartmoor, conquer the Glastonbury Tor, soak in the Roman baths and solve the elusive mystery of Stonehenge and Avery and hopefully pinch a cute Brit surfer boy's butt on Newquay beach.
I dragged myself out of bed predawn and found myself waiting in line to throw my luggage in a compact yellow bus that screams "Wild and Sexy" on its side. This is my tour bus for the next five days.
The first stop is the cryptic Stonehenge. Apparently some jokers rolled the giant slabs of stone from hundreds of kilometers away to its destination. The rocks are OLD, at least older than my 91-year-old grandpapa. I read the info on site and it states that the earliest use of Stonehenge as a burial site dates back to 3000BC. The chilly wind numbs my face and as I tread carefully around the ancient stones trying to catch a glimpse of the paranormal activities that circles this ancient site. I was hoping to befriend a druid or two, and maybe catch Tom Cruise peeking out from the edges. I sneaked out my own little Pagan symbol to greet the mystic formation.
Next, we visit the cathedral that has the tallest church spire and the oldest working clock in all of the United Kingdom, The Salisbury Cathedral.
I didn't get to climb the winding steps of the spire nor did I get to flip through the pages of the original Magna Carter (A very important piece of legal document that formed the law system of today) but I did get the Merlion to take a breezy stroll with Saint Mary.
The next escapade took my breath away, literally. We had to take a hike up a mountain, hill, slope, whatever you call it, to get to the Cheddar Gorge. I'm an urban girl who slums in bed gorging down a tub of Ben and Jerry's chunky monkey whilst watching endless episodes of Californication and The Big Bang Theory. It translates to "I'm a lazy bum with dangerously low muscle mass unsuited for strenuous physical activities". My pink boots surrendered under me as I reach the half way mark.
I was the last girl huffing and puffing at the end of the line but by some miracle, I reached the top. My reward is the view.
It was a quiet and serene day with white birds scooping through the magnificent gorge. We all kept quiet just watching the moss clinging onto the gorge swaying in the breeze. U2 was playing in my mind, It was a beautiful day. A good closing picture for the end of day 1 adventure.
