A week in Surfers Paradise...need i say more?
Our driver Beaver dropped us off at the transit centre, having travelled down from Brisbane, including our encounter with zorbing! Shortly after arriving, we bumped into a familiar pair of swedish girls who had been on our fraser trip but in a different group.. these were Emily and Louisa (or lou-lou as she preferred). Instantly they insisted we shared our first night at surfers together.. how can anyone refuse?? They decided we should bring the alcohol while they would rustle up dinner for the 4 of us. So after checking in at our hostel we showered and later made our way over to their hostel which took a bus ride and a short walk.
The night was very enjoyable and began with dinner the girls had prepared, followed by a good drinkin session of goon (the cheap wine we had bought).. soon the idea of heading into town dissapeared and instead, we played cards and chatted into the night. 8.00am the next morning we woke still at their hostel much to our disgust, seeing as we had paid for our hostel and not slept there! A waste of money but worth it never the less.. About 10.00am we finally left to head home to the YHA where we would catch up on sleep - we actually slept till 5.00pm :P
After waking we explored our surroundings, looked up prices for the near by water and theme parks, disscovered the beach and the town centre. Knowing we had a week in surfers paradise we could plan our stay. We decided to save money and not go out (drinking) until christmas eve, and to visit the waterpark one day...oh and go surfing!...of course, but mostly we chilled out, watching films and t.v. We purchased a shopping load of food from the supermarket, in order to save money; and enjoy food and snacks in our hostel when we wanted. One very interesting afternoon at the beach, the wind was exceptionally strong, and playing football was a different experience, little did i know I would be shedding some pounds on this evening, little did marti know i would either; He would find it funny though...here we go...
marti passed the ball to me down the beach in a normal fashion, yet with the extreme help of the wind, the ball flew passed me (oh, i should mention it was one of those beach ball sort of ones not a proper footy) and with the lightness of the ball, the wind swept it down the beach a fair bit. (Surfers paradise is a long beach with few people) and so the ball carried on travelling. I was now chasing at full sprinting speed and the ball was still very far away (and not yet stopped) once my pace slowed the ball got further away, unitl i was jogging pathetically. Despite this losing battle, i had an unexpected determination to not give up, i had gone far enough so...I looked back and marti wasnt visible, neither was the ball in front, yet i kept running, i wouldnt let the ball go to waste. After sweat was heavily shedded, i could see someone in the distance with a green ball; and relief beemed into me. The people who held onto it, gave me the ball, i said thanks, and i faced a long walk back. Marti was very confused, and didnt no what to think, so he waited. A while later my figure appeared on the beach horizon. I held the ball in glory, after overcoming my mission. Once i got back all marti could think to say was 'oh my god", with a very suprised expression.
Our day out at wet n wild was accompanied by two girls we had met the night before at our hostel. A ginger, freckly girl from england, and a dutch girl. Some of the photos from the rides were particularly funny, especially some of the ginger girl, and some of me. I am very lucky, as some how i persuaded marti not to take photos of the photos, if you get me.
Christmas eve soon arrived, and we prepared ourlselves in terms of food and drink. Then we decided to finally try our hands at the surfing. After only ever trying it out in Newquay, we both eagerly awaited the ozzy waves! to the beach we marched, rash shirts on, and surf boards under arms. We rented long boards of course, only being begginers and all that. The conditions were very choppy, and harder to surf than newquay, although they seemed big, they were nothing compared to what we would come accross further down the coast. Typically we had a bad start, and became wiped-out far to often. The both of us gained some sense of balance and control after a long while, but no where near what anyone would call surfing. our rental time was up, in what seemed the quickest 3 hours ever. We understood how bad our surfing was, but this wasnt to be our first attmept, and things only would get better....as you will see in a later blog.
Christmas eve night was spent in no other fashion then getting merrily pissed, partying in surfers paradise centre, accompanied by french dude alex....a very merry christmas :) (still wearing christmas hats)
Christmas day!!
Our christmas day began with a bizzare situation, yet usual wake up call, as christmas households go. Basically we never thought this year would be a year to wake up early. Looking forward to a lie in on christmas day, we slept soundly...until the pounding sound of the fire alarm kicked into action at 5:00am!! can you imagine how annoying that was. We were forced to evacuate and wait until the fire brigade (two engines) cleared all was okay...poor fireman! we went back to bed afterwards.
Once properly awoken, we decided to hire some body boards from reception, take our ball also, and head for the beach. It was a good day to body board. Although it felt very weird to be spending christmas this way, we still enjoyed our chilled out christmas, everyone is all so chilled out here. We brought christmas hats back in brisbane, and were intent in wearing them all day and all night.
Finally we had a 'Barbie' christmas day-night, drank some beers, and rang home!!
By boxing day, we were ready to leave the Surfers Paradise...our next oz bus driver was to be pete, or python pete as we were informed.
Special christmas thanks :) we understand how late these blogs are coming in to you people, but what can we say, were just having too much fun, and as you can see, it always continues. Thanks for all your comments up to now and over christmas.
