G' day people!!
We have reached the land of australia, and have no hesitations in telling you how much we love it...yet before i begin this blog entry of stupendus fun, i must tell you firstly, we are very grateful for all messages we have recieved :)
On the last day in singapore, matthew's financial situation was going in a positive direction, well at least i can get to my money now anyway...so the whole stolen wallet thing is dead and burried (hopefully). We boarded our flight to cairns in happiness, until we saw the pathetic leg room on the flight (tensions in marti were rising) then we realised the lack of any screens or headphone slots for any potential entertainment??? wat was going on? then to bring marti to the boil, the worst possible person could have taken a seat next to him, bringing the flight from bad to worse, rest asure though, we spotted some spare seats at the back and enjoyed a three seater to our selves, along with two free drinks (alcohol) and free portable screens Yay!!! problems solved..
We arrived in cairns early morning, but i wouldnt say we were bright eyed and bushy tailed. We took a bus to the centre, and checked in - two backpackers, with sweaty heads. Our first dorm in Cairns was a little more expensive than we would have liked, but we realised that tiredness, hot sun and big bags dont mix. ...Now then, let me tell you our first night in cairns could possibly be one of the funniest moments so far. Picture the scene in your brains people, a four bedroom dorm (my god i wish i could draw a picture) there were two men already occupying the room. There were two bunk beds and we were forced onto the top of each. Late at night we came back after a saturday night....researching the beer situation, after an hour or so, we were both pleasantly asleep. Below marti was an irish man, below matthew was a south african (not back yet) when the South African returned, he brought home a female friend ..go on you can all laugh now, so yes all night I was on the top bunk like a jockey on top of a horse in the cheltenham gold cup race!!! so you can imagine martis shock and laughter, especially as he had a front row seat on his top bunk looking down as he quotes (just a white bare ass, and a pair of legs) whilst i was on top just a swaying pendulem. I heard all the sound effects for about 2 hours. I had to bury my head in the hostel pillow to stop myself from laughing, when i saw martis face as he noticed. I wished he had got the camera out but he was too caught up in what he was seeing i suppose.
The morning came, and we both checked out hastefully in order to avoid anymore of the awkwardness. I may add though, the horney B*sturds were even going at it with us all wide awake and in the room. The irish guy was pretty funny aswell, though only because every time we said good bye to him he replied 'Alryt lads i'll talk to yas' we didnt know his name, but reffered to him as paddy.
Our next hostel, which we had found at a much cheaper price was called Coronas. First night we were seperated into two different rooms, in martis was a dutch tough guy called frank, but friendly aswell. Most day times in Cairns we had spent at the lagoon, chilling out and dipping regulary into the free pool!! Oh and something to add here we have purchased books, yes thats right people marti aswell, this isnt a typing error, marti is currently reading a book.
With our recent habbits of bumping into people we have formally met, this was no exception!! we came across the people we met in our hostel in singapore, Emily, Brad, tim and two new guys John and Jamil.
In the first half of the week, we had spent most nights and some days at the lagoon with these fellow travelers. One special pub/club to mention in cairns, was the Woolshed. A popular destination for most travelers..Sadly, many antics arn't so easily remembered a couple of days on, its mainly a blur of words. Wat i will share is...A danish, and couple of finland girls...some fit ausie females, a couple of wales dancing on tables was slightly humourous, and of course, the highlight of this club was Premiership footy LIVE!! well good.
If we wern't partying at the Woolshed, we would be recieving our evening meals there..FREE! Some hostles including our own give free hostel vouchers at the woolshed everynight. We know we are back packers and we know we should be grateful, i would like u all to know we wern't living it like lords with our free meals. These meals u see. They are?? hmmm well the sort of thing our fellow friend Anthony Kelly would destroy in 5 secs in one mouthful. It wouldnt even fill someone as short as corrine. But never the less, we still went :)
After one happy night out we came back to deal with a foolish drunk frenchman. He was convinced his dorm was in martis where it was full. The dutch lad frank was not happy and rose to his feet, when he saw the guy spitting on his belongings. Marti and me held the front line trying to push him out the door through all his mumbling. Espcially when he pointed to martis bag and said it was his own..no no no marti thought, that was far enough. Once out the door, we failed to remember i had to get to my room downstairs, and face a drunk, foolish frenchman..who was angry after being pushed out the door.
Since entering ausie lannd, prices are disgraceful, and eating out for every meal is a luxury from the past. We must fend for ourselves, by use of each hostel Kitchen. There are positives and negatives to this. As we search for the cheapest way of eating, there was but only one great way to do so...After a months wait, our screaming taste buds have longed for their dearest peanut butter on toast. The old beans on toast have made some appearances also, and good old cornflakes...still though PB on toast as we've come to say is our official diet.
Cairns (we've been informed) is the best location to see the great barrier reef so we decided to splash out on a one-day trip. After booking our snorkelling trip to the reef for the following day, we decided we needed a night of no alcohol (for various $$ reasons). So...to keep us both occupied we visited a local cinema, watching Saw 4. An experience that reminded us much like cineworld at home.
The day of the reef... The crew members consited of mainly normal people all very lively in the morning. Amongst the crew was what can only be described as a south american indian who had traded his bow and arrow for snorkle gear, and his make up and feathers for a wet suit. Every time he spoke we thought he might say 'How' in a very deep voice!!
Of the both of us went, with the american indian, and our spray on wet suits as you might have seen through photos. They wern't that tight really, you just had to get someone else to yank it from your bumpiece every five minutes or so.
Its was a good day out, seeing some wonderful deepsea sites, whilst pigging out (free food on board)..no sharks ate us, marts snorkling device played him up abit. and he looked slightly white face at one point, although many people on board did. My snorkling device was no problem for my pee-head. all was well, and we sailed back with the american indian singing with his guitar.
More good news followed our adventures on the reef. We visited the Oz experience office, sorting out our departure of cairns...You see, what was becoming a bad week for our poor wallets, being beat up by far too many nights out and hospitalised by the whole reef day out..the four of us (marti, me and our wallets) were all very pleased to be gifted tickets to an event called the 'Ultimate party', in order to make up numbers - as it started in a matter of hours. It was basically a pub crawl to the best bars in cairns, with free entry everywhere, free food, and an open top double decker to take us around the bars. We were told the last one consisted of 120 people!!! yay we were buzzing at this news.
After a quick shower, we put our best (and cleanest) clothes on, with high hopes of many females ;) aswell as a damn good night! We strolled with our tickets in one hand, our free meal voucher in the other, which of course we had visited before...the anticipation was immense.
Once we had eaten, we walked off, turned the corner, expecting a whole crowd to await us... it was not to be. It happens there was a reason for our free tickets that should have been worth 25 dollar. hope still remained in the whole 15 people who had turned up for this 'supposedly' awesome pubcrawl! There were however, some cool people and good looking gals who we introduced ourselves to. All in all a good night out, but possibly too much spent. oh well???
Driving towards the last part of our excitable week, another amazing re-appearance happened again...can anyone guess who??
It was those funny lads from nottingham once again, for a third time, jonny and dave!! you see..after the ultimate party we needed a good chill out at the lagoon with our regular milkshakes (one a day). We dived into the pool, suddenly shadowed by a lonesome dave, sat on the other side of the lagoon, him and his guitar. Where was jonny i hear you all say? don't panic, dave was left chilling whilst jonny explored the great barrier reef. This day was probably one of our most favourites, oh and the night :)
The day with Dave was spent learning the guitar, it turned out dave was a bit of a dude on the guitar, and could play many good tunes. So i would now say-current marti and matthew status of guitar level: Learners.
The rest of the day involved showing dave the ropes of cairns and greeting jonny back from his day out at sea! That night we dolled up once again, and ventured to the lads camp site (as they are renting a camper). We enjoyed a fun sesh of poker which was a good idea, seeing as marti was getting abit cold turkey from the lack of it! What else would top a game of poker? yes, a crate of ozzie beer :D
Okay, discussing the poker game is a sensitive issue. Firslty i would like to boast that I matthew went all in to dave, and got him out no problemo, and latter went all in two hands in a row and got jonny out. My confidence against Mr Hoskins however, wasn't so powerful, and after many 'all in' calls, marti triumphed! (applause)..
Nothing more to say except we had another very enjoyable night - played some pool, bantered, took some immature photos and boogied the night away. A perfect week i might say, just a shame we aren't really aloud to spend that much in one week.. sod that - good times :D
I would like to inform you that this is my 4th attempt at typing this blog, as the rest were cut off either half way through or at the near end (feeble computers you see)..Soooooo i finish this blog finally, almost another week down the line. Please forgive me for the lack of effort this time round, but there is only so many times you can re-create the magic.
The wondeful Oz expericne now continues people, and we are very excited, so much so that we brought some more bread (toast) :P !
Already some good stuff to tell for next weeks edition, however its good bye from me, and goodbye from Him (marti)..
