9th May - Yangshuo
Yangshuo is a very small, picturesque city. It was built in between high, peaks of lush green and limestone mountains and a winding river. The city is more westernised than previous places, there are many souvenir shops and stalls and western food but it has a welcoming feel to it and has the traditional Chinese style buildings.
In the afternoon, Lee and myself and some of the others on the tour decided to do a Chinses cooking class. It was so much fun!We had our woks, ingredients, chefs hat and apron and a very big, sharp knife lol :p The cooking teacher took us step by step to make 'Gong Bao Chicken', 'Vegetavle Dumplings' and 'Braise string beans with prok and chilli sauce'. It was great to see what kind of ingredients they put in their dishes and it amazed us to see how bland English meals are compared to Chinese dishes....however...no one can beat a roast dinner in my eyes!!! We then got to eat our dishes in the restaurant dowstairs!!!
In the evening we went down to the river. We actaully went to see 'THE HSBC advert man'!!!!!! (Look for the HSBC advert with a chinese man catching fishes with his bird) (We got our tour guide to ask him anout it, and apparently he's also been in a film!)
We got on a small wooden boat and followed the Chinese mans' small boat around the river....he had about 6 birds tied to his boat that he let loose into the water. They would dive into the water to collect the fish for him. Once they had surfaced with the fish in their mouths, the Chinese man would grab the bird and emtpy the fish into his basket. The birds didn't swallow the fish as they had a small bit of rope around their necks so it wouldn't go down...not worry though, they weren't in pain :)
It was so cool to see these birds do this and at the end we got a photo with the guy....which Lee was exstatic because he couldn't wait to see him! =D
